I had the pleasure of meeting this marvelous human being on a shoot and we stayed in touch for the few years he had left. I have never met another human in this life more accepting (for review) of other people’s ideas. If he saw a flaw in your argument he would cut you to ribbons. But never in a mean way. He thought. He appreciated other thinkers (I don’t kid myself for a minute that he regarded me as such but he was polite enough to disguise that.) This was a man who loved and enjoyed life. And that is, after all, what it is all about.

Yes, this has always been a big problem. Goodness knows I have have had my problems with Avid in the past – as in having my system totally lock up and having to get a “remote blessing” at ten o’clock at night. But the thing is, as annoying as that experience was, they were there at ten o’clock on that night. And they fixed my problem. I don’t have as much experience with Adobe but the experience that I do have tells me that they are similarly responsive. With Apple it has always been difficult to get them to even accept that the software in question even came from them. And if you were having problems with it then it was likely your own fault.

I have an investment in FCP – as it is being called now – legacy. If there is a new MacPro, and it is crystal clear that all FCP 3 software and all its attendant hardware will function properly with Mountain Lion and any new MacPro for the foreseeable future, and said MacPro is even close to competitively priced, then yes I would definitely consider buying it.
The problem I see is that this company has been spoiled by making margins much higher in the recent past than they will be able to make in the immediate future in the workstation market. And my guess is that management will be unwilling to accept that. I’ve had a long, profitable run with Apple and I would like it to continue. But I just don’t see it happening.
I hope I am wrong.

It is true that these are mad times were living in. I well remember the days of “that’s just what it costs” and because options were limited that was pretty much what it cost. But these days options are seemingly limitless. As soon as someone states “you can’t do that kind of work on this then some guy or gal comes along with some box that allows you to do this on that. I know I would not stake my business on the assumption that people will never accept lesser quality than they were used to in the past. If that were true people never would’ve abandoned LP’s and there would be lines of people outside movie theaters that employ digital projection waiting to get their money back. We are indeed in transitional and transformational times. And where she stops – if indeed she ever does – nobody knows.

Of course. Thunderbolt solves all problems just as firewire did when it came out ten years ago. Look at the profusion of Thunderbolt products available for me today. Clearly the industry is rushing headlong toward Thunderbolt technology. I don’t know how I missed it.

Yeah, I’m waiting for NAB (which I might actually go to this year after a four or so year hiatus) to provide some clarity. It probably will with software. With hardware? I think it’s gonna be anybody’s guess, at least for this year.

“Summer breeze makes me feel fine…” Very true in the northeast today. But the Brewer & Shipley reference sends my mind inevitably toward “…we were just around Barstow…” Amazing I have lived this long.
