Unfortunately, the 48v phantom power switch applies to all mic inputs.
And, just on a lark, I shot an email off to Radial to ask them the question. Your assuption is correct. They responded by saying that the Pro AV2 would protect it. They also said that this application is precisely what the Pro AV2 is for — converting all kinds of unbalanced audio to balanced and helps clean it up (ground lifts, pads, etc.) I also like the fact that it has multiple inputs (1/8″, 1/4″, RCAs) and provides a universal way to connect to mixers.
Problem solved. Thanks again for the input.

Hello Rodney and Rob.
Thanks for your responses. I guess I got used to using a DI from experiencing problems associated with connecting consumer electronics devices’ unbalanced output, especially cheap laptops with even cheaper sound cards. I didn’t think of just running the iPod to the Tape In. I’ll give that a try & see how well it works.
I guess my real question is if the presence of phantom power from the XLRs would cause any potential problems or damage to the iPod if hooked up thru the Radial Pro AV2 DI. I did verify in the manual that the AV2 puts out Mic level so I could easily use 2 Mic channels via XLRs. If the Tape In works well I’ll likely just go that route. However, it still would be interesting to know the answer, if just for academic sake. Thanks again!

Tim

FYI – the Fostex FR-2 can record time code but only with an optional add-in card.

Thanks for the heads-up. I did see the special on Digital Juice. I’ve got loads of Juice on my shelves. Great stuff!
I did try Boris’s Pan and Zoom. I’ve been pretty impressed with the quality (when adjusting the settings properly) but it does take a load of render time. Also doesn’t allow for ‘Z’ access zooms. But, at 1/2 price, I think I’ll pull the trigger.
Thanks again for the heads-up.

Here are a couple in an inexpensive ($119) collection. I also had need for an opening with red curtains and bought it. It’s not too bad – and gives you a couple of curtain options as well as some other tidbits.

Hello Aanarav,
Thanks for the response.
“From my Acrobat 8 Pro experience, I would say that the trial is valid for 60 days. Other than that, you’ll have to pay the usage and subscription fees. However, don’t quote me on that 😉 I’ll try to get official info for you, if interested.”
No need to get the official response. I’m going to order the Production Premium upgrade regardless of the amount of time for Connect. I hope they give us a bit more than 60 days though – you can just go on their site and get a 30 day free trial without purchasing anything. No big deal either way.

I’m still trying to absorb all that is there before I comment, but I do have a question.
Part of the Production Premium suite includes Adobe Connect. Adobe Connect is sold as a subscription service at $39.95 per month, or $395 per year. Given that it’s ‘included’ in the suite, do you know for what time period this is?
I’ve used Adobe Connect Professional at the office for about a year now and it’s really fairly powerful. I look forward to the personal version. I think it’s limited to 15 concurrent seats but that’s not too bad.
Thanks for any info you (or anyone else) has on this subject.

March 19, 2007 at 12:27 pm in reply to: Need advice feeding field recorder to a DAT back up recorderI occasionally use my Fostex FR-2 for this:
It has an optional time code card as well. It’s a tad on the expensive side but given that it records to Compact Flash or Microdrive, the workflow is a snap. It has also proven to be pretty reliable too. Personally, I haven’t used it ‘in lieu of’ but rather as ‘a backup to’ recording to the camera. Sometimes a touch of paranoia isn’t a bad thing!

Have you been to Ty Ford’s site? There’s lots of good info out there (www.tyford.com)
I would think you should be able to get a really good mic in the $1500 range for what you describe. Of course all depends on your expectation, budget, etc. Naturally, it’s not all in the mic – there’s quality pre-amps, room treatments, etc.
I’ve gotten some good VO results from a Shure KSM/44 (800 bucks or there about)
