That’s the best way to go. Daisy chaining devices can slow them down. You’re trying to feed frames from the camera into Premiere, and then send them right back out through the same firewire port. End result = traffic jam.

Certainly. Both programs can do it. You didn’t say what version of Premiere you’re running, though, so some of my instructions below may require an extra click or two.
In Premiere, right-click on the clip and choose Speed/Duration, and set the clip speed to -100%.
In After Effects, click on the layer in the comp, choose Layer menu > Time Stretch, and set it to -100%.
If you want make other changes to the speed of the footage, AE is the better program, as it’s Time Remapping feature can be keyframed.
Also, after reversing the direction of your clip you should also reverse the field order. In Premiere, right-click on the clip and choose Field Options, select Reverse Field Dominance. In AE, right-click on the footage in the Project window, choose Interpret Footage > Main, and change Separate Fields to Upper (assuming you started at Lower, otherwise vice versa).

Rik- What version of AE are you using? The control to change the UI brightness is only in 6.5.
If you have 6.5, the control is in the User Interface Color preferences. It’s a slider control, labeled “User Interface Brightness”.

You don’t need a plug-in to put NTSC and PAL on the same timeline. What you’re facing here is the simple fact that the PAL footage will need to be converted. Premiere’s not going to do a great job of it, so you’re going to want to convert it before putting it in the timeline. Canopus Procoder is what I usually hear recommended (but I have need of it myself), but other folks may have other suggestions.

If your video looks vertically stretched in the monitor window, then you probably aren’t using the right settings. Make sure your project uses widescreen settings.

Felipe- The black bars aren’t necessary. Just because the bars aren’t there doesn’t mean it’s not widescreen.
Your camera and Premiere are dealing with “native” widescreen material. Meaning it’s designed to be viewed as widescreen, like a 16:9 HDTV, not scaled down on a standard 4:3 monitor. (Your camera’s LCD is likely 4:3, which is why you were seeing black bars.)
Unless your image is being squished to fit 4:3, which is a different issue altogether, I don’t see that you’re having a problem.

You’re asking the wrong person. Layer sets are pretty standard for the PSD format, though. Gimp is a free open source editor that I’ve heard good things about, you might want to investigate it.

There are a couple of possibilities. One is that you may have the wrong keyboard shortcut set selected. Go to the Edit menu > Keyboard Shortcuts and set it to Photoshop Defaults.
Otherwise, your preferences may be damaged. Hold down CTRL+ALT+Shift while Photoshop starts to clear them out and start fresh.

This is just my observation, but Adobe seems to have Photoshop Elements and the full version of Photoshop on separate cycles. Photoshop CS2 came out last Spring, about a year and a half after the last version (CS). Photoshop Elements, however, just came out with the latest version (4) only a year after the previous one (3).
What I think that means is that when Adobe develops a feature for Elements, it may not make it into the full version of Photoshop until the next release, or vice versa. For example, Elements 4 has a new “magic” selection tool that CS2 does not.
