    Hi-

I have a clip that I’d like to play in reverse (so rather than two soldiers saluting and dropping their salute, they’d be raising their salute and holding it). I understand that this may not look natural, but I’d like to see what it might look like. Is this possible in Premiere and/or After Effects (I have access to both programs)?

    Thanks

Certainly. Both programs can do it. You didn’t say what version of Premiere you’re running, though, so some of my instructions below may require an extra click or two.

In Premiere, right-click on the clip and choose Speed/Duration, and set the clip speed to -100%.

In After Effects, click on the layer in the comp, choose Layer menu > Time Stretch, and set it to -100%.

If you want make other changes to the speed of the footage, AE is the better program, as it’s Time Remapping feature can be keyframed.

Also, after reversing the direction of your clip you should also reverse the field order. In Premiere, right-click on the clip and choose Field Options, select Reverse Field Dominance. In AE, right-click on the footage in the Project window, choose Interpret Footage > Main, and change Separate Fields to Upper (assuming you started at Lower, otherwise vice versa).
