If reinstalling AE fails, try reinstalling and/or updating the drivers for your sound card.

Where did the file come from? It’s possible that AE may have problems reading the codec that the audio is in.

Since AE is really a graphics-focused application, it lacks a lot of the finer controls for audio like this. My best suggestion is that you look for a plug-in that allows for pitch manipulation, else use Premiere or Audition or another program to edit the audio and match it to the video from AE.

AE 6.5 Pro comes with a set of plug-ins from Cycore. They’re on the CD, you have to install them separately. The Light Wipe and Light Burst effects may help you achieve the look you want, though it’s not as good as Trapcode Shine.

I think I’ve also seen tutorials on how to do this type of thing. You might want to do a Google search and see what you find.

  • What you’ve described involves some basic compositing techniques. Such as using an animated mask on the outer layer to reveal the other layer below. Making it work and look good is a different matter entirely, that will depend more on what exactly you’re doing.

I think to achieve what you want, you’ll want to take a look at Automatic Duck.

  • 1. Are you still getting the same error? Have you searched the support knowledgebase on the Adobe site for the error?

    2. Did you try pulling out the OpenGL plug-in altogether?

    3. Have you updated the drivers for the video card?

January 9, 2006 at 6:27 pm in reply to: problems with aspect ratio in timelines

Encore sets the timeline’s aspect ratio to whatever it thinks the footage is. That’s why you can’t change it.

Click on the footage in the Project window, and choose File > Interpret Footage. Encore is probably mis-reading the aspect ratio of the footage, and you just need to change it in here.

  • Encore will have transcoded the file to MPEG-2, and stores it in a folder in the same directory as your .NCOR project file. Within that folder, I believe it’s in the Sources folder. You can copy this file out and open it in Premiere, but beware- Premiere doesn’t always handle MPEG files very gracefully. If you have problems you may want to convert the file back to AVI using VirtualDub or another utility. (I wouldn’t normally recommend re-transcoding as you’re going to experience some amount of quality loss, but you may not have a choice here.)

What is the number of the timeline the disc restarts on? (Check the Properties window.) If it’s #1, that might explain it- the player is going to timeline 1 instead of the first play of the disc. Test the disc on multiple players and see how widespread the problem is. Try playing the burned DVD in your computer as well. It could be a problem with this particular palyer.

Ah, yes, I remember Dragon’s Lair quite well. It sat back in an oddly well-lit corner of the arcade, and I dumped many nickels into that old LaserDisc-based machine. Pity that I was never really able to get more than a couple of levels in. My brother had good luck on the Commodore 64 version, though of course the graphics were junk compared to the video in the arcade.

You’re on the right track for your own game. If you keep your animated game segments short, and all the animations (success, failure, transition, etc.) as timelines rather than menus, you’ll probably be okay.
