  • Unfortunately, it means that the file did not get written to the filesystem properly, even though the blocks were allocated. You could try a tool like Disk Warrior to reassemble the blocks (they are a linked list, so they connect to one another internally), but I wouldn’t hold out much hope.

    See what the filesystem thinks is there versus Finder.

    I would say that StorageDNA is in the same realm as Crossroads – it’s a wrapper that adds layers of functionality and management to the base LTFS layer. LTFS is not handling the robotocs or tape changes, the wrapper software is.

    The drive will work, but not as a library drive. LTFS is for standalone drives only unless you purchase a wrapper suite like Crossroads suite.

  • The main thing that you need to keep in mind is that HP never sold full height LTO-5 SAS drives outside of OEM and automation configurations. That means that these drives are the result of a “dumping” activity.

    I’m not saying that this is a bad thing, just explaining why the pricing is so unbelievable

    I did check with my reps and they are under the 3 year warranty, but you may need to press the HP support rep if you run into an issue since their books all say that no such device exists.

    At that price, I’d recommend you grab one quickly before they’re all gone.

    They work great with all of the major tape archival solutions on Mac, Windows, Linux and most other systems.

  • Since this is a restore issue, submit a ticket as a DEMO customer and indicate it’s for restore.

    Also, be sure to update to the newer BRU PE 2.3.7 since I promise you that will be the first step.

    Hi Brad,

    I’m not trying to turn this into a BRU sales forum and I apologize if it’s seen as such, but there’s no way to PM you here.

    Our BRU product will do a great job copying files with full verification between the drives at the speed of the drives. Because BRU applies a 32 bit CRC to each 2K of data read from the source drive (not just per file), the writer (restore) process can detect any flaws in the data as it’s writing the files to the destination drive. Of course, any problems would be recorded into the execution log.

    An example command would be:

    cd /the/source/path
    sudo bru -cf - . | (cd /the/destination/path ; sudo bru -xvvvf - -ua -PA )

    Of course, you can be as broad or as granular as you like with what’s actually processed.

  • This is something that you should take up with our support team (support.tolisgroup.com), but I’d start by updating your BRU PE version to 2.3.7. There’s a reason that all of the upgrades occurred between the versions.

    Otherwise, you don’t need the catalogs to restore the data from a tape, you just can’t do it from within the PE GUI. Again, our support team is the best place to start for help with BRU PE.

    The input you received on not using the low end drives is spot on. We saw huge failures during the hard drive dry spell when all we could get were consumer-level drives. Our failure rate with the non-ES WD drives (Caviar Green and Blue) was over 45% after 4 months at 85% active cycle.

    We now use the Seagate Constellation drives here with the Aluratek for system cloning and our large array packages and the drive failure rate is very low (less than 1 in 250) over much use and long periods.

    Getting a T-1 line is definitely not a good solution in our realm – a T-1 moves data at 1.4Mb/sec. That means 144Kb/sec or 8.64MB/min. If you do go to cloud storage, you’ll need a much heftier line and I’d wager your local cable provider may have what you’re looking for. I’d recommend a pipe of no less than 20Mb/sec up and down. That’s costing me around $300/month. With that bandwidth, you can move data at around 2MB/sec or 120MB/min. Additionally, you do know that exactly when you need to restore that one important file, your network will be down and you’ll have no way to retrieve the data … 🙁

    However, replacing your dying LTO-3 with just an LTO-4 (you can still write to and read from LTO-3 tapes) will get you to 80MB/sec or 640MB/min.

    If you work out the math and frustration of the comparably sluggish performance of even 20Mb/sec, you can see how that LTO-4 will pay for itself in just a few months.

    As for library automation, check around. Smaller libraries (1 drive, 8 slots) are available for just a bit more than a standalone drive and they can provide 6.4TB of managed storage with LTO-4 or 12TB with LTO-5.
