You can try it without the sudo and see what you get. It should work properly since you indicate that Ignore permissions is turned on for the drive.

Joe – it appears that there is still something on that disk that’s identifying it to FCP X as camera media. Can you list the folders and files in the root of the drive typing this command in a Terminal followed by dragging the volume from your desktop to the Terminal:
sudo ls -la
You’ll be prompted for your user password and then you’ll see the Unix-recognized layout. Maybe one of us will recognize another file or folder that’s causing this improper recognition.

You don’t make it clear, but does the Mac itself see the drive as properly mounted? If so, have you tried repairing permissions from the Disk Utility App?
Also, in the drive’s “Get Info” panel, is the “Ignore permissions on this drive” or “Ignore ownership on this drive” under Sharing and Permissions checked?

I’ve used everything going, and each has it’s pluses and minuses. And none of them has actually completely alleviated RMS. What I HAVE found to be very useful is to find a therapeutic massage place and get a 25 min forearm massage 2x a month. I got turned onto this by a PT tech when I had to give up SCCA racing because of the RMS caused by 25000 (slight exaggeration there) shifts in a 43 lap road race. I’ve been doing that for over 8 years now and I’ve felt no further twinges in my hands regardless of the mouse / roller ball / track pad / tablet (or stick shift) I end up using.
Plus, it just feels really, really good!

Third option – get an LTO-5 or LTO-6 tape solution and archive the old, unused data to tape and clean off the spinning storage rather than further expanding it. With the capacity points and speed to recovery provided by LTO drives, there’s a much better solution than simply throwing more disks at it.

Unless you’re looking at DDR2 vs. DDR3 or seriously huge speed differences, double the amount of RAM will always be the best way to go for ALL memory hungry 64bit apps.

Just a thought here, but have you tried reformatting the cards instead of simply overwriting them? I always remove and recreate the partition around every 3rd overwrite.

3 things to consider –
1 – Verify that the full manufacturer’s warranty is in effect on the device that you buy
2 – make sure that you’re not buying a refurbished device
3 – make sure that they actually have them in stock
If you are comfortable with the answers that you receive, grab the uint and save some money. BRU products will work with everything that they sell so long as the device that you receive is in proper working order :).
One more tip, the HP versions of the IBM drives that you list are in the same price range. By buying the HP drive instead of the IBM drive, you’ll get proper OS X support should you need to contact HP for help with the unit.
