Hi Tom,
We’ve got samples of Seagate, WD, and HGST 6TB drives on the way and I should be able to provide definitive answers late in the week.
However, since OS X doesn’t have the size problems that we see in Windows and Linux where you need to muck around with 4K block size geometry changes, my suspicion is that they will be plug and play back to OS X 10.5.8.

We recommend HP and Fujifilm explicitly regardless of the drive vendor. It’s simply that the “smoothness” of new tapes is so important in the world we live in where a tape is usually used once and then stored – unlike a business backup situation where tapes may be rewritten 100’s of times.
While the issue may have been reduced with the other vendors’ formulations since the original issues were uncovered, we prefer to stick with the “knowns” rather than the “maybes” :).

How big is you’re inet pipe? Also, what happens if you need something and your connection is down? What if you no longer wish to use their service – who gets your data?
While I’m a strong proponent for tape, I would use USB disk drives before the cloud for anything larger than a few MBs unless you have an OC-24 or better pipe.

… and that is why we sell the BRU Server / DAX package as a single item when combining BRU Server with CatDV. In fact, it’s also why we now sell the whole package (CatDV / DAX BA / BRU Server) as a solution rather than making users suss out the parts to make it work.

You do need to use some type of software to allow the Macintosh to recognize the LTO tape drive. The OS X platform does not offer native tape support built-in. So, whether you are using the product such as BRU or the free LTFS solutions you will need to add software to allow the Macintosh to talk to tape drive.
Additionally, when using LTFS, you MUST use the LTFS driver and tool layer from your drive’s manufacturer.

Hrumph! The nerve of some people breathing new life into obviously obsolete Ma Pro systems!
Really, though – great job. We’ve gotten two of our 1,1 systems up and running 10.9.2 and there really is life left in them. The only issue we’ve seen is that memory is tough to come by and you really need to get 12GB+ into the machine for real success. We also use “adapted” Nvidia Quadro cards (shout out to YoYoMarv!) and have had outstanding performance and compatibility from some otherwise South-bound hardware.
