We keep a very close watch on the media pricing and we adjust our pricing very quickly when things change (you guys don’t let us keep much stock on hand, thank you ☺ ). Unfortunately, David is probably right about LTO-8 causing a drop in LTO-7. BUT … we didn’t see a drop in LTO-6 when LTO-7 hit. I believe that it’s a combination of adoption and demand. We still sell 2:1 LTO-6 to LTO-7 drives and 10:1 LTO-6 media to LTO-7 media. It really will boil down to economies of scale.

I concur with David – more spindles = better speed.
You don’t mention how you wish to connect, but of you have a SAS HBA with an available port (4 channels), you could use something like this chassis from iStarUSA:

Hi Luke,
No changes. Right now, only the HighPoint RR 4522 (PCIe) or the RS 6328 (Thunderbolt) options will actually drive the LTO-7 devices at top speeed on a Mac. ATTO has resolved the lost/bad block read issue with the R-series cards, but the speed is still where it is.
And, since PreRoll Post and many others are dependent on LTFS for tape I/O – they don’t actually write to the tape drive – they will only be as robust as the LTFS layer for the vendor’s drive that you are using. We’ve been testing all versions of LTFS along with BRU through all of this and until something changes at the core of LTFS on OS X, you’re going to be stuck with what it is.

Not wanting to step on (edit) Dan’s toes, but it all boils down to one acronym – LTFS. Any solution that uses LTFS for it’s tape layer is going to be subject to the same issues. Since LTFS does not provide true error reporting back to the apps that depend on it for tape I/O, all that they can do is report the error.

There are so many “definitions” of archival and backup. What is the client actually looking to acheive? Are they hoping to record their projects for long term storage offsite with little or no need for restore? Are they looking to protect the projects from system failure? Are they looking for a way to protect data from mistakes or provide versions that can be brought back into the workflow to undo edit changes?
It’s been said many times in discussions of tape versus disk, but tape (such as LTO) is truly the best solution for long term storage. On the other hand, if they are looking for oops protection or versioning of changes, a disk-based platform may be all that they need.
One thing that is not a good idea for media production organizations is “cloud-based” backup. While good for home users or small businesses, your network infrastructure will be a major issue. When you consider the amount of data that an average video / movie project generates on a day to day basis, unless you are using multiple large pipes from your facility, you will quickly discover that you are generating more data than can be processed between your site and the cloud service in an acceptable time. Additionally, most cloud services seem like a bargain until you have to restore / retrieve something.
A solution that provides both local tape and disk storage for combined backup and archival and then partnering with a facility such as a local Iron Mountain for the actual offsite storage of the tapes for true archival will offer the best of both worlds.

No – BRU PE’s a relatively simple GUI front-end to the BRU engine.
Check your system logs and see if you can find entries relating to BRU PE in the crash report sections. Best of you open a ticket so so that the guys can help determine what’s going on.

The issue is related to the additional (useless?) SIP restrictions that Apple added in 10.12. We are working on the 3.1.22 update, but for now you should simply not authenticate when starting BRU PE as described on the BRU PE download page.

You should always open a support ticket with either HighPoint or TOLIS Group (support.bru.com) for answers to questions like this. The configuration is one that many BRU users are utilizing with both BRU PE and BRU Server under OS X.
We can provide you with all of the pieces that you need to get the HighPoint drivers and Firmware sorted out since we were the driving force behind getting the tape issues sorted and the new firmware and drivers created :). There’s more to it than the firmware version.
