The 1U rack mount enclosures don’t have any brains, so you can mix and match anything you want.

You just need to download HPE StoreOpen Standalone to run LTFS if you’re wanting free software.

  • I don’t really think it’s an issue with the hardware though. It sounds like you just had some software issues. The free IBM LTFS is really bad and they don’t care about it. If you have LTO8 on Windows, the drivers aren’t signed and will block you from using it unless you disable “SecureBoot” in BIOS, which is a bad bad idea.

Another pro-tip about using your IBM LTO6 on Windows…. don’t use the latest drivers, use the generic LTO driver built into Windows.

Didn’t you try BRU and liked it? The software vendor you buy from will support you. If you want something more focused on LTFS then myLTO and YoYotta are worth looking at as well.

If you want to use Windows check out XenData Workstation.

  • Dell is just a re-badged IBM drive inside just like almost all others.

If you want current drivers and the best support for standalone drives, then buy Quantum brand. Quantum has a dedicated page to standalone drive support.

When you call Dell about anything half the people don’t know what a tape drive is.

I actually take back about the head, even though it’s still possible. When you fail performance from “unexpected data” this is an error code that can mean several different things.

Reduced capacity can be from a head, but just not sure without seeing the drive in person.

You can’t login to a tape drive via ethernet. The IBM 3580-H6S has ethernet for the purpose of using IBM Tivoli encryption manager.

We repair and refurb tape drives all day long at Magnext / MagStor.

I saw that you mentioned running a cleaning cartridge 10x times in a row. This is a big time no-no and can kill your drive head. Only clean when the light is on.

If you’re failing performance tests with good media, then your head is is usually going bad.

The way LTFS works, it can never give you an accurate capacity of the tape because each file you copy over writes a separate marker file.

I don’t think you’d get that far if it were a high sierra security issue. Most likely the new software Quantum made didn’t really cater to the model B (HP) drives.

I would suggest trying the demo to YoYotta and see if that works.

You take a speed hit on half-height standalone or HH library drives on LTO8.

LTO4 and below was a bigger drop for half-height. I think LTO5 is when it was leveling out and you wern’t getting any decrease up to LTO7s.

LTO1 even had 2x half heights with different speeds.

+ LTO8 Full-Height is 360 MB/s on libraries. Was hoping IBM could do full height standalones, but they aren’t playing ball.

I also agree M8 is horrible.
