I didn’t need the links! All the code is at the main page. Everything works as advertised. That’s exactly how I wanted it to work! 🙂 Thanks again Kevin! And thank you Filip too. That’s the second time I use your code in my project. 🙂 Something tells me that this is not the last time either. 😉

Thank you Kevin! It looks like there are plenty of links from that page. I will investigate them. 🙂

I’ve finally found a solution after all! And it was not so far away. 🙂

  • Sweet! Thank you very much, Filip! The video looks just great! Believe me, I’ve searched all over the internet but I couldn’t find anything even close in quality to this solution.

  • I’m sorry for the off topic but I couldn’t find a way to contact you Filip by other means. There is no “Contact” or “PM” button at your profile page or I’m just blind.

Anyhow, I saw your answer from year 2006(!) and the link in the answer doesn’t work of course. I just wonder whether you still have the project. 😉 I don’t have too much hope though.:-) I’m asking because I have the very same problem that the original poster in 2006 and I’d like to look at the result before I dive into layer copying. 🙂

Thank you for your reply Dave!

I don’t need so much realism. I forgot to say that the whole scene is animated. So, nobody will expect a “real” projector light beam there.

As to your tip, yes I have the screen material in a separate comp but I don’t see how I can replace the footage of the light layer. It’s just a light, no footage. Or did I misunderstand your tip?

I’ve investigated the problem all over the internet. I found out that many people ask for the solution of exactly the same problem. However, nobody got a proper answer. Thus, I think that it’s quite impossible to make such effect in AE. I would need a real 3D software to achieve the goal. 🙁

Haha, while I were typing you did exactly what I asked for. 🙂 Thank you!

Anyhow, after I looked at your project, I realizes that I didn’t succeed to find the right combination between Threshold and Radius. I had higher values for both. I tried the same settings as you have and it worked better.

However, I still get some artifacts at the shadow and discoloration of the floor around it. So you do in your example. Besides, the lower Threshold I set, the more impact it has on the lightened parts of the walls which decreases the texture detail. In my final composition I will have the foreground lit well but the glow effect might interfere with it.

Anyhow, I guess I will have to play a little more with the settings and figure out how it works.

Thanks a lot for all your help! It feels really nice to know that there are people that spend there free time to help others to get better in something. 🙂

Yes, full size. No, no masks.

Kevin is it asking too much if you could build a simple composition as described above and post the result here? It would take like 10 minutes and we would get the answer what the problem is.

That’s exactly how they are ordered:

There are also some other experimental layers that I’ve switched off.

The Glow effect affects probably the white solid (the door opening) but not in a way I would expect. The effect is a bright light spot at the same point where the light projects on it. Instead I expect that all objects (the rear wall and the ball included) would have a glow effect (something like a halo) around them. I guess you have the same expectation since you’ve advised about the effect. But of some reason it doesn’t work like that. :-/

Thank you for your reply Kevin. However, I’ve already tried to play with Threshold and it didn’t help. I think the problem is something else. Of some reason the Glow effect affects only the light layer (hence, it looks coming from a single point and not wrapping around the objects) despite that it’s applied to an adjustment layer on the top.

It might help if I clarify how the door is built. It’s a white solid between the light and the rear wall. I also set the light transmission to 100% in the material properties. If I place it as you suggested behind everything (including the light) the door becomes gray with a white spot in the middle (where the point light is).

I realize that it can be difficult to know what the problem is without having access to the project. If you are out of ideas and want just drop the case, no problem. I will understand – you’ve already helped me a lot. I will try to solve it somehow on my own then. But if you do have other ideas what I can check to solve the problem I’d love to hear them. 😉
