There are several issues in using using data from a Midifile to trigger AE effects.

    1) Getting the data from the MIDI file.
There are various programs which can convert a MIDI file to a text (or CSV) file.

    2) Preventing multiple events from occuring at the same time. For example, a drum might want to play twice within the same video ‘frame’.

    3) Formatting the data for use by AE. Other than using scripts, the best way seems to be format the data in AE ‘clipboard’ format.
    As described at https://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WS98BCDDB7-89CB-49cb-B94D-6CEB6CED4462a.html

For the first two points, my free program might be of some use:
    https://www.tima.demon.co.uk/midianal.htm

And my demo video shows the final result:

    Hoping that is some use.

  • Many thanks to Dave for the explanation. I assume it affects the rendering of both Raster and Vector layers.

January 19, 2010 at 8:42 pm in reply to: MIDI beats instead of time or frames?

If you know the Tempo and it does not change; then it is simple maths to convert Beats and Bars to Frames. And someone may know a neat way to import such data into AE.

However, inaccuracies will occur because (AFAIK) KeyFrames are applied to the start of a Frame, which won’t necessarily occur exactly on a Beat. And it gets very hard if there are changes in the Tempo.

You may find that only having the Beats is inadequate. Rather more fun is to have all the Notes, Channels, Velocities and durations.

Although not designed for AE, the Windows program “MIDIANAL” https://www.tima.demon.co.uk/midianal.htm may be of some little help. And an updated version might be available, on request, from the Author.

January 17, 2010 at 12:41 pm in reply to: What’s wrong with my script to enable layer styles?

Although Lloyd’s reply is undoubtably correct, I still don’t understand how to implement “propertyGroupSpec.addProperty(name)”.
I also fail to understand the Scripting Guide’s explanation of PropertyGroup.

Although I want to enable ‘Glow’ (as the original poster had wanted), I am assuming the same concepts apply to, for example, setting the type of Light (Spot, Ambient etc) after adding a light using “.addLight”.

I have searched widely for online explanations or scripts, but even terms like “propertyGroupSpec” only lead me back to the scipting guide.

Can anyone point me to a page? Or provide some demonstration code.

    Many thanks.

December 17, 2009 at 4:39 pm in reply to: Positioning 2 cameras

I had started, using that way; but found that parenting one camera to another appeared to have unexpected results (the 2nd camera started pointing in the wrong directions). I put this down to my inexperience, and have made a note to re-examine it later).

However. Fuelled by Mr Ebberts suggestion; I have created a 3d Null and made it the parent to both cameras. This appear to work much better(but I need my brain to stop spinning before checking everything).

    Thank you.

My apologies. May I hope for a moderator delete my thread. Thanks.

October 11, 2009 at 8:19 am in reply to: WMV export quality not satisfactory

Whilst rude to post “me too!” responses; may I say how delighted I was to read this thread. This is exactly what I found a few days ago.
I got better WMVs from Windows Media Encoder than from Adobe’s.
Like Mr Peterson, I saved uncompressed from Adobe, and let the Microsoft sofware create the final output files.

I wonder if comparing the files, using GSPOT https://www.headbands.com/gspot would show any differences in the codecs or settings used.

The female voice (near the start) sounds like a normal voice mixed with standard (according to the film world!) computer noises.
But, I suspect the voice was also treated to voice processing software, such as the kind at https://www.antarestech.com (where I believe you can download free time limited versions).

Would some of those effects have been done using ‘Bullet time’?
