Or mpeg streamclip is a good one, use it to transcode everything to Prores, quick and easy.

I believe you can use the Log and Transfer tool in FCP7 to ingest footage from the MRC1k directly in, and can even set it to transcode to prores on ingestion. This would definitely be faster than capturing from tape. However “under 10,000 $” will get you better than a Z5- have you looked at a Sony EX1 (similar tech, broadcast quality specs) or even Panasonics new AG AF101 with a massive DSLR type sensor but better use as a camcorder? I have a Z5 and wish I could swap it out for the latter of the two cameras I mentioned, especially as it’s basically the same price as the Z5 used to be. Although with all of Sonys “z” series, you do seem to pay partially for reliability- I took that camera round china and on a massive event involving mud and rain- don’t get me wrong, not advertised as weather proof or anything, but I trust the camera to not fail.

I’m fairly sure that with DV and indeed HDV, what you pay for (in a more professional camera like an XL2) is better glass and 3 sensors and more manual controls. The way it’s recorded is pretty much the same, except from more sensors. When capturing, you’re literally going from tape to ilink (FireWire), so there will be no quality loss. However, I think you need a camera which is capable of playing the same format, so if you shoot 25p and get a camera which can only Play 50i for example, you will probably have issues.

FInal cut also edits H264 quite well. if you do it well enough you barely have to render. That doesn’t mean you should do it though. iMovie accepts more formats than FCP, but does that mean its a good idea? Its because Premier (dare I say it) is aimed at a consumer and student market, and is therefore designed to work better with awful acquisition formats.
ITV (in Britain) recently bought a whole bunch of Premiers for their producers and directors to do basic cuts to give to editors when the case called for it, because producers and directors normally don’t give two hoots, or even two snorts about codecs and formats and stuff. (Yes, “STUFF”, thats a technical term, if you haven’t come across it, you CLEARLY need to do more googling.😀

This is my point, Im fairly certain (although may well be corrected here) that they are the same in everything but framerate, which is why calling them “Pal” and NTSC” doesnt really apply, because the terms Pal and NTSC never USED to stand JUST for framerate, it involved all the other stuff (resolution, colour etc).
“Pal” and “NTSC” these days seem to be talking about the framrates of the area, which is surely inaccurate, but not argued with (similar to how people here talk about Colour profile and chroma subsampling and get confused with terms, but we leave it because we know what they mean…)

Forgive me then, but I dont understand. If there is subsampling, isnt that still being compressed? What is uncompressed about something which has chroma subsampling applied and is only 8 bit? I know 8 bit uncompressed HD exists, but I dont understand why its called uncompressed. Thats like saying a Z5 to a nanoflash can record Uncompressed HD?

Also did I read you tried H264? Dont edit in H264! Its NOT a codec designed for editing (or acquisition really, despite DSLRs…), Its an output format. Prores is by far the best for most stuff these days.
