Best Cam for Quick FCP 7 Workflow?
Hi all,
I’m looking to get a new prosumer camera and I want one that’s going to provide a fast workflow in FCP 7. I was looking at the Sony Z5U because it can shoot on both tapes and CF cards, but then I saw somewhere that the files from the cards are M2T files and that those aren’t the best for editing in (they’d need to be converted?).
Basically I want to know two things:
1) Would editing the M2T files from the Z5U be really time consuming and make it just as slow as capturing tapes real-time?
2) If answer to question one is yes, what other suggestions do people have for cameras under $10,000 that would provide a quick HD workflow in FCP 7? -

I believe you can use the Log and Transfer tool in FCP7 to ingest footage from the MRC1k directly in, and can even set it to transcode to prores on ingestion. This would definitely be faster than capturing from tape. However “under 10,000 $” will get you better than a Z5- have you looked at a Sony EX1 (similar tech, broadcast quality specs) or even Panasonics new AG AF101 with a massive DSLR type sensor but better use as a camcorder? I have a Z5 and wish I could swap it out for the latter of the two cameras I mentioned, especially as it’s basically the same price as the Z5 used to be. Although with all of Sonys “z” series, you do seem to pay partially for reliability- I took that camera round china and on a massive event involving mud and rain- don’t get me wrong, not advertised as weather proof or anything, but I trust the camera to not fail.

The easier and faster workflow is with the EX. With the SONYs you can rewrap or edit the MP4 directly on FC.
With the JVCs (EX) just drag the .movs to the time-line.
