I don’t think that you can change the size of this text box under the EDIT tab (although I haven’t tried to change the monitor resolution). But a simple workaround could be that you create your text in a smaller font and only after finishing your text, select all the text (Ctrl A) and change the font to the size you would like to use in your project.

I made a good tutorial about masking in Vegas. But since it is written in Dutch, it will probably be not very helpful to you.

But for what I understand, you would like to mask your text in layer 1 (upper layer) on the position of a object in layer 2 (lower layer). But you find it difficult since you don’t see the object in the pan/crop window of the text.
So instead of masking the layer with the text (layer 1), I suggested you should make the mask on the layer of the object (layer 2).
When you are finished, you simply copy the mask to layer 1 with the text (COPY and PASTE ATTRIBUTES) en finally remove the mask from layer 2 with the object (RESET MASK).

To obtain the best results, never use the BRIGHTNESS AND CONTRAST FILTER, since this will treat all your pixels in the same way. First of all, start using your Histogram in the VIDEOSCOPES to analyse your footage. Then optimize the use of the colour spectrum using the LEVELS effect. Set the whitebalance and the ‘black’ with the COLOR CORRECTOR en set the brightness with the COLOR CURVES EFFECT. The latter has the advance over the BRIGHTNESS AND CONTRAST FILTER that you can adjust dark and light pixels seperately.
