    Audio Mixdown is something people often NEVER LEARN TO DO or FORGET ABOUT (especially if there were no problems “before”).

    I have posted this exact same message scores of times and more often than not, I get a response that says that it “worked”.

    Never underestimate the power of a Mixdown if there are “skipping” or “missing” problems of any kind… even on an EXPORTED QT.

  • There is a function in FCP that is often overlooked… and it can help with many audio and video “skipping”, “sticking” and “missing” problems.

    You should “Mixdown” the Audio for playback before you dub out of FCP, or during the edit, if you have audio/video stuttering, drop-outs, sync-slippage, or freezes.

    NOTE: Mixdown has even been demonstrated to help with slipping, skipping problems (or “missing” audio clips) for files being EXPORTED as QT (or similar) files out of FCP.

    First, SELECT ALL of your audio tracks (highlight them) on the timeline, then:

    Sequence Menu > Render Only > Mixdown.

    You should see a dialog box telling you its rendering.

    It might seem to make little sense that “Mixing down” even simple audio tracks will “fix” complex video “freezes” or random audio dropouts to tape or export, but it CAN.

    NOTE: It does not matter of you only have one audio track, if there are random freezes during output, you should try the Mixdown.

    Well, not every SECOND or so…

    DF TC skips the first two frame numbers (0,1) at the start of each MINUTE, except minutes 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 (for mathmatical and timing purposes).

    Now, back to the OP’s question:

    If you are shooting on 90% of today’s DV SP camcorders, you CAN’T CHANGE the TC setting, it will ALWAYS be DROP-Frame by default.

    If you happen to own a DVCAM unit, most allow the TC to be set and changed to non-drop-frame, if desired.

    So, if you are shooting for a client who requests NON-drop-frame TC, and your camcorder can’t be set for that, you need to explain that:

    A. It won’t matter in the least for editing purposes (you can use both DF and NDF TC intermixed in the same timeline/edit.

    B. It won’t matter in the least for QUALITY (has nothing to do with adui or video).

    C. It won’t matter in the least in the length of the footage or the project (see “A.” above.)

    D. It won’t matter in the least for the editor of the project (see “A.” above.)

    Questions like this are posted very frequently. And many (most?) of the problems are solved by a simple procedure.

    Reduce the OPACITY (to about 70% to 80%) which, over black, will make it a bit “grayer” and less of a high-contrast item for the compression.

    Add a very small amount of guassian blur (say, .25 to 1.0).
    This will “smooth-out” the crisp type edges over more scan lines.

    Did you turn up the headphone VOLUME?
    The monitor volume controls on Sony camcorders are sometimes on the LCD flip-out screen.

    When recording dialogue, do not leave the microphone on the camera.
    You need to get the mic in close to the actor(s).

    A boom pole and mic operator (who knows how to keep the mic out of the shot) is the best bet.

    Or use lavaliere mics carefully placed and hidden on the actors.

    As you have discovered, if the audio is not “right”, the whole scene is nearly “unwatchable”, regardless of the video image.

    Again, find a local PRO to help you.

    Yes, just only connect the composite (yellow) cable and it will be the souce the camera will “see”.

    Its also very helpful to know this:

    An S-Video input/output can be instantly “converted” used as a standard COMPOSITE signal (same as the yellow cable’s signal) by just connecting the two “inner conductors” together.

    The chroma and luminace signals, when combined, are simply the same as composite.

    There are cables made that have asingle S-Video plug on one end, and 2 RCA plugs on the other end.
    If you hook the 2 RCA plugs to a “Y” adapter, you will have instant composite input or output on the other end of the “Y” adapter.
