  • Audio in DVD cutting out – please help [cross-post]

Posted by Max Frank on January 8, 2006 at 9:54 pm

    Hi,

I’ve successfully burned dozens of copies of my feature-length documentary using iDVD4.

Lately, I’ve been getting this really strange problem:
The video plays perfectly all the way through, but at a certain point, the audio just CUTS OUT!
    Sometimes it’s at 50 minutes. Sometimes 20.

    Can anyone suggest any remedies?
    Serious deadline looming.

    Thanks in advance,

    Wayne K.

That’s not a lot of information to go on, but if you’ve never had this issue before I’d certainly suspect that your media may be suspect. Try another brand or another batch and see if that makes a diference.

There is a function in FCP that is often overlooked… and it can help with many audio and video “skipping”, “sticking” and “missing” problems.

You should “Mixdown” the Audio for playback before you dub out of FCP, or during the edit, if you have audio/video stuttering, drop-outs, sync-slippage, or freezes.

NOTE: Mixdown has even been demonstrated to help with slipping, skipping problems (or “missing” audio clips) for files being EXPORTED as QT (or similar) files out of FCP.

First, SELECT ALL of your audio tracks (highlight them) on the timeline, then:

Sequence Menu > Render Only > Mixdown.

You should see a dialog box telling you its rendering.

It might seem to make little sense that “Mixing down” even simple audio tracks will “fix” complex video “freezes” or random audio dropouts to tape or export, but it CAN.

NOTE: It does not matter of you only have one audio track, if there are random freezes during output, you should try the Mixdown.

    THAX,

One would think that if the guy has previously burned many DVDs from this project before now that he is well beyond the timeline mixdown stage. But, I guess you never know around these parts.

[David Roth Weiss] “One would think that if the guy has previously burned many DVDs from this project before now that he is well beyond the timeline mixdown stage.”

Audio Mixdown is something people often NEVER LEARN TO DO or FORGET ABOUT (especially if there were no problems “before”).

I have posted this exact same message scores of times and more often than not, I get a response that says that it “worked”.

Never underestimate the power of a Mixdown if there are “skipping” or “missing” problems of any kind… even on an EXPORTED QT.

Be sure (after the Mixdown) to Export a “new” QT from the project with which to burn a DVD.

You aren’t going to believe this, but I did the mixdown of the audio, re-exported to QT, and the DVD burned perfectly (!?!)

[I also trashed the plist file, but I had done that before and it didn’t seem to help the first time, so I assume it was the audio mixdown!]

So, thank you so much to all of you who helped, especially to “Thax” – you saved my little butt.

    Yours in gratitude,

    Wayne
