I’ve used this app for at least a decade.
Puts a tiny icon in the corner of your screen.
Click it and every charater in a font is shown.Click on any character and the app “types” it instantly into any kind of document (or charater generator) you’re working with.

The line-in “hole” is not suitable for a microphone (it is for line-level, not mic-level).
You can use an audio mixer to boost the mic up to line-level.Many editors use a mic plugged into a camcorder or deck and input via the FW connection.
Some buy a USB audio “box” like the Griffin iMic (there are countless others of greater expense).
You can plug the mic into that unit and it will send the signal via USB. -
Setting is HERE:
Final Cut Pro (menu) > User Preferences… > General > Real-time Audio Mixing: (increase the number of tracks).
I use “20”, but yes, it all depends on your computer speed.

Final Cut Pro (along with virtually every other Pro-level edit software) is not compatible with mp3 files directly.
You must first convert an mp3 to an AIFF file, then import only the new AIFF file.
iTunes does a great job of this.
Here’s how… its really fast once you set up iTunes the first time like this:iTunes> Preferences > Importing > Import Using: AIFF Encoder> Custom> 48.000 kHz, 16 bit, Stereo >OK
Drop your mp3 into iTunes window.
Select (highlight) the file you want to convert, then:Advanced (Toolbar Menu)> Convert Selection to AIFF
iTunes will create a new file (in seconds) with the SAME NAME as the original, but ending with .aif
You can set up a special folder for iTunes to send it to, or just use Search to find where it “defaults to” on your HD.Drag this new .aif file into your open FCP Browser.
The actual .aif file will (and can) stay in the iTunes folder, just its “reference” icon shows in the FCP browser.
It will play and edit just as any other media file in FCP. -

No need to “duplicate” the audio tracks to add level (an possibly complicate the edit down the line).
Just add the Audio Filters > Apple > AUPeakLimiter and adjust the “Pre-gain” to any level you want.

The bump you describe sounds like you’ve got some “gunk” in that unit’s lens mechanism.
Try your zoom technique on another camera with the same lens (rental?) and see if it behaves the same way before you blame it fully on the design.
