Was this an ad you created in Indy or did the client give you something? If the client gave it to you, what kind of file was it?
Did you ever print the file from your computer? Any kind of printer (not the paper’s press).We’ll start there and then we can narrow it down based on your responses.

What does it look like when you choose Window>Output>Separations Preview
With this on, it should give you an accurate representation of what will be printed. If colors are still incorrect, I would suspect that they are RGB, rather than CMYK. Bring them into Photoshop, readjust and save as…

That reminds me of when I first really started listening, rather than engineering. One of the best things I did was listen to the “Golden Ears” cds. (I couldn’t afford them at the time, but was able to a borrow them.) The part I remember best are the pure tones. They would just play pure sine waves and announce the frequency before each played. Gradually they would get spaced closer together. Then they were combined at different volumes. It really honed my EQ skills. Hearing the frequency in the music and then being able to immediately dial that in on the EQ to add or subtract it is invaluable.
Hearing those tones made a life-long impression in my brain.

Is the lav mic the ONLY mic that was recorded? If there are other lavs, camera mics or shotguns you might be able to use some phase cancellation from those other sources.
Another (far out there) option, is to try and recreate the room noise with a software reverb, using another clip that has “good” sound. Then take these reverb settings and apply them to the “bad” clip but out of phase. Its a long shot, but it may provide just a little bit more of an acceptable sound.
of course still use the subtractive eq-ing as mentioned
…a little bit of this and a little bit of that mixed in with another suggestion and it may all work out.
The best though, would be to re-shoot, ADR or VO.

Great advice Nick! I would emphasis the CALL back and not email, twitter, facebook, etc….and don’t leave a voicemail (other than to say please give me a call at your convenience). If possible, face-to-face communication would be best, but a phone call will do. Its very important to be able to sincerely relay emotion that doesn’t come across well (and can even be misinterpreted) from written word. (Half the problems and perceived attitudes that are seen here are because of the miscommunication.) And most importantly, try to speak with the client and not the secretary. (Sending the secretary a thank you note for the repeat business would be good too, since she speaks to many more people than the person she works for.)
This goodwill gesture will ensure that the client isn’t offended. It may not result in referrals, but it will help keep the client from bad mouthing her to others. Good luck.ps-I often don’t try to discourage people from visiting the COW, but if she is not going to, I know of another site which may meet her needs as a graphic designer.

Why not rip the disc? Faster than real time & depending upon codec used, the quality is about the same as the original.

But he says this is happening on TWO different computers. Anything is possible, but I find it hard to believe that two drives are bad. If they are, go run and buy some lotto tickets too.

The DVD player doesn’t know if you put in a Disney movie or if it is something you created. Panasonic doesn’t want to get sued for implementing some kind of check on the DVD player that gets bypassed and then they spit out unprotected streams from all DVDs. So it doesn’t check and doesn’t care – all output via HDMI is protected.
Blackmagic (nor other reputable companies) are not going to sell any gear that defeats the protection scheme. The rumor is that if you create some piece of equipment (that records via HDMI) and it is used to defeat copy protection, that not only the user but also the manufacturer is held liable.

Are you talking about doing a PIP live? Or are you thinking about doing it in post?
I guess if you were doing it live, the mixer should time the two components and would be fine.
If you do it in post, simply convert one of the formats to the other before editing. (or both – as I often like to transcode to ProRes)Tech-T Productions
