Blackmagic Multibridge Pro – DRM
Our organization purchased three Multibridge Pro unita and three Panasonic DMR-EA18 DVD recorder/players. The primary reason for the DVD was that it has HDMI out that we wanted to use to capture DVD’s that were produced in our facility for revisions to update the material. As it turns out, apparently the DVD players automatically put Digital Rights Management information on ANYTHING coming out of the HDMI port. We can get around this by using the RGB outputs, but this causes a conflict with other gear in use.
Is there anyway to disable the DRM in the Multibridge HDMI input via firmware upgrade/change?

The DVD player doesn’t know if you put in a Disney movie or if it is something you created. Panasonic doesn’t want to get sued for implementing some kind of check on the DVD player that gets bypassed and then they spit out unprotected streams from all DVDs. So it doesn’t check and doesn’t care – all output via HDMI is protected.
Blackmagic (nor other reputable companies) are not going to sell any gear that defeats the protection scheme. The rumor is that if you create some piece of equipment (that records via HDMI) and it is used to defeat copy protection, that not only the user but also the manufacturer is held liable.

While I agree for the need for copy protection, IMO it is encumbent on the producer of the DVD to imbed it on the media during the transcoding process. By putting DRM on the hardware output, it assumes that all activity taken from that output is for illegal purposes. I guess we’ll just use the RGB and capture in HD. Pretty much the same quality, just a different signal path and a pain.
Our next DVD player will be one of those cheap no-name models made in China that won’t treat us as criminals. Too funny actually as our work is done in and for the DOJ.

Why not rip the disc? Faster than real time & depending upon codec used, the quality is about the same as the original.
