Upload high quality files to youtube and link to them on your sites. (Saves bandwidth too)

I just remembered this bit from a couple weeks ago. A client came in with a file that had a .pmd extension. I banged my head for awhile trying to open it. Come to find out it was nor a page maker file. It was something like print master deluxe. Not trying to be rude, but are you sure it is a page maker file?

There are some crazy error messages when trying to open unsupported versions. I’m not exactly sure of the verbiage, but I would bet that this is your case here. See if you can find out what version created the file. If it is higher than yours, you would need them to save it out as an Indesign Exchange file, so that you can open it.

I haven’t been using CS5 yet, but with CS4, 3 & 2 we’ve had no problems. Lots of our archive material is from PageMaker.

For your TRUELY simple stuff…
Click the image with your “Selection Tool” (v)
Now select the “Add Anchor Point Tool” (=)
Click on the image border to add some points
Finally, use your “Direct Selection Tool” (a) and move to points to crop it out.For the little bit more involved, you can try the Detect Edges. (Object>Clipping Path>Options…) You can get a rough outline with it and then clean it up with the Direct Selection Tool.
But, as Ron says, the best tool for the job is Photoshop. Indy can do well though for those quick and sloppy jobs.

This line of instruction is a bit confusing:
“Select color picker and click on desired part of image.”
I believe they are actually using the “Eyedropper Tool”, which is in your Tools Palette (where the selection, pen, type, etc….tools are located). The default keyboard shortcut for the tool is “i”. The rest of it looks OK.
Personally, I skip all that. I select the box first (that I want to add color to) and use the eyedropper tool to select the color from any other object on the page. This will color the box with your selected color. Then I go to the Swatches Palette, and from the drop-down select “Add Unnamed Colors”. This make the new swatch. Double-clicking on the swatch you can then change the color mode from RGB to CMYK.
Not terribly different, but you can assign a keyboard shortcut to “Add Unnamed Colors”. So with keyboard shortcuts:
v – select box
i – select color
(user defined key – I use F4) – adds color to swatches
double-click swatch and make necessary adjustments.Tech-T Productions

Try to resave the document with the “save as…” command. Then edit that new file.
If that doesn’t work, try to export the document as an InDesign Exchange file (*.inx) Then edit the inx file. (of course save the document afterwards if this works)Tech-T Productions

Sounds like the document is being “flattened” when made into a pdf. If that is the case and corporate won’t allow changes to the pdf settings, then there is no “fix”. To avoid flattening of text, make sure it is on the very top and it doesn’t have any interaction with other objects (such as transparency or blending effects).
Typically, flattening is used to preserve compatibility with older systems and to avoid font substitutions if the RIP or printer doesn’t have a certain font. More modern gear works well with the newer pdf versions and they can see the embedded subset fonts in the file.“pdf transparency flattening” is a good search term to use to get more information.
