  • Hi Ignacio. The forum changed some of the formatting. Try this:

    find . -maxdepth 1 -iname '*.mp4' -exec ffprobe -v quiet -of csv=p=0 -show_entries format=duration {} \; | paste -sd+ - | bc

You will need ffmpeg installed to get ffprobe (from ffmpeg.org, macports.org or homebrew).

  • Jared, Bob remotely configured our QNAP very quickly, answered lots of questions and is very reasonable.

  • If you have installed ffmpeg, you have ffprobe which can calculate durations. In the Terminal.app, navigate to the directory that contains the video files or type cd and a space then drag the folder containing the videos onto the terminal window and hit return. Then run this command (hopefully the forum doesn’t mess with the characters or formatting).

    find . -maxdepth 1 -iname ‘*.mp4’ -exec ffprobe -v quiet -of csv=p=0 -show_entries format=duration {} \; | paste -sd+ -| bc

It will do a search for all mp4 files in the current directory, then run ffprobe to get each of their durations and paste the results into a calculator to tally them. If your files are not mp4s but are .mov for example, change ‘*.mp4’ to ‘*.mov’

As Francois says, 10.4.9 has some really great media management improvements, but before you upgrade, do some research. If you do upgrade to 10.4.9 make sure you first archive your 10.4.8 and have backups of the libraries you’re working on. Several people are encountering issues with 3rd party plugins that are causing problems with FCPX 10.4.9. If you use Sony FX9 media, don’t upgrade until Sony releases a new plugin.

In addition to what Mark said, you could also try to determine if one of the source clips is causing the problem and isolate it by creating a multicam without all the clips. For example if there are 5 sources, try creating a multicam with 1-4. If you get the bulk of the multicam sync’d, you can manually add and sync the problem source.

I second Jeremy’s recommendation for Ripple Training, especially the Warp Speed Editing course. Steve and Mark do an excellent job of explaining things.

Also helpful is the free tutorial series from Izzy Video: https://www.izzyvideo.com/final-cut-pro-x-tutorial/

FCPX is deep and different enough from other editors that the time spent in these tutorials will end up saving you many, many hours in the future.

  • If you’re running the recently released FCPX 10.4.9 it’s possible the 3rd party plugin you’re having trouble with needs to be updated.

I don’t think there’s a built-in way to automatically display source timecode. Depending on how many clips you have, you could apply the Timecode generator to each and manually set the start time to match each clip’s start time.

I also found this method using compound clips. https://youtu.be/OLnJUxsOT68

I second Brad’s recommendation for the Ripple Training courses. Mark and Steve do a great job explaining things quickly and clearly. Well worth the cost for the time-savings in my opinion.

I am a recovering Avid editor and FCPX’s media management was confusing to me at first because of its flexibility. That said, FCPX doesn’t offer a native way to consolidate and trim footage with handles.

I haven’t used this but Worx4x can consolidate and trim with handles: https://worx4.com/Worx4-X/worx4-x-overview.html

A nice example of working with FCPX, Postlab and Frame.io. https://youtu.be/E2jsZK1el6o
