    Wow. Why didn’t I switch before? I have a few questions…

When I am on P mode, whenever I move clips and overlap each other, one of the clips actually trims by itself. How do I disable this feature?

Is there a way to automatically separate the video and audio file as soon as I drop all the files in? I love how Sony Vegas made it easier to just mute an audio line and use that to edit B roll. I have A roll and B roll mixed together and I want to be able to edit B roll without any audio and without having to go through and mute and unmute everything using the v button.

Is there a way to raise or lower audio for multiple clips?

Is there a way to automatically crossfade audio clips that are next to each other?

Is there a way in A mode or P mode to be able to click on the actual thumbnail/ main timeline and mark a point for delete or split or whatever instead of having to click above or below the audio or video file? Sony Vegas, I was able to click directly on the thumbnail and I find it much easier that way.

If I am playing something on the timeline and it goes to the right and runs out of space, I have to pause and play it again before the timeline adjusts so I can see the rest of the clip/or other files. Is there a setting that the timeline moves along with what is being played? or do. have to move the scroll to the right manually?

Is there a faster way to speed up/slow down clips? On Sony Vegas I was able to model down control or shift and drag the end of the clip in and out and it would change the speed.

Is there a way to group clips together without creating a compound clip? On Sony Vegas, I would just highlight whatever clip and right mouseclick or short gut create new and they would all be together and then remove from when I wanted to separate anything.

Should I disable automatic render? will it affect the heat of my computer or how fast the editing software goes?

When I add files to the library thats already on my computer, should I just leave it as they are and not create copies? Will creating copies means more space taken up on my hard drive? I don’t plan to keep the raw files for long either way. Once I edit something and it’s done, It’s usually done and I rarely go back to it (mostly for space purposes)

    Thank you!!

[Kyle Le] “When I am on P mode, whenever I move clips and overlap each other, one of the clips actually trims by itself. How do I disable this feature? “

Position is like an overwrite, so it will trim. Do you not want to trim? If you want to trim just the video, then expand the clips, and trim one side of the video so the audio will than overlap.

[Kyle Le] ” I have A roll and B roll mixed together and I want to be able to edit B roll without any audio and without having to go through and mute and unmute everything using the v button.”

Use the inspector. Select as many clips as you want that have similar audio channels, choose the audio icon in the inspector, and turn off any channels you’d like. This can also be done before adding the clips to the Project.

[Kyle Le] “Is there a way to raise or lower audio for multiple clips?”

Select them, and hit control plus or minus (up or down).

[Kyle Le] “Is there a way to automatically crossfade audio clips that are next to each other? “

This is new in 10.4.9: https://support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/crossfade-audio-in-final-cut-pro-ver66d503b23/10.4.9/mac/10.14.6

[Kyle Le] ” Is there a setting that the timeline moves along with what is being played? or do. have to move the scroll to the right manually?”

No auto scroll unfortunately. But use the ‘h’ (hand) tool and click and drag the timeline while it’s playing.

Look up how to use “Secondary Storylines”

[Kyle Le] “Should I disable automatic render? will it affect the heat of my computer or how fast the editing software goes?”

I usually do, but it’s up to you. If you like it, you can leave it on, and yes, it will process files while you are paused, so your computer will work hard when you aren’t. The rendering pauses while you are playing back and working, so it shouldn’t effect overall editing speed.

[Kyle Le] “When I add files to the library thats already on my computer, should I just leave it as they are and not create copies? Will creating copies means more space taken up on my hard drive”

I usually do not create copies if I don’t have to, and I choose “Leave in Place”. Yes, copies will duplicate files so yes, it will take more disk space.

I highly recommend a training program to get you up and running. I like Ripple Training: https://www.rippletraining.com/products/final-cut-pro/warp-speed-editing-in-final-cut-pro-x/

I second Jeremy’s recommendation for Ripple Training, especially the Warp Speed Editing course. Steve and Mark do an excellent job of explaining things.

Also helpful is the free tutorial series from Izzy Video: https://www.izzyvideo.com/final-cut-pro-x-tutorial/

FCPX is deep and different enough from other editors that the time spent in these tutorials will end up saving you many, many hours in the future.

CommandPost does this, a free ‘addon for FCPX – https://commandpost.io/
