It’s a kludge to actually use so heads are exploding trying to deal with it. Some people have made workflows for it.

How scopes are shown/read should not have any effect on how the tools work. If one wants to see how the actual SDI signal looks one should check out a hardware rasterizer. Full/legal range and subblacks/subwhites have been a thing since forever and there have been workflows for those as well.

I do this sometimes when I forget that the extend command exists. The razor blade snaps on edits so it’s pretty fast to use that in some cases.
Like in grading there’s no set standards how you should work in an NLE. Unless you ask an Avid user ???? or you have a certain post workflow you need to keep in mind. -

There are no standards on how one would use the tools (there are pitfalls though) but there are standards that you’ll need to adhere to if you’re actually doing stuff professionally. For example if you need to grade/convert to a certain color space and gamma or you need to make sure your delivery is broadcast safe etc.

Most likely they shot this with a some sort of IR depth camera (like the Kinect) with some funky settings.

What version of Premiere are you using? Have you tried installing the free version of Resolve and importing the footage there?

better image quality?”Bigger file doesn’t automatically mean better. VBR is great because it will use the bit rate that the current footage needs. If you have a bunch of dark or bright scenes (or you have crop bars) they will use less data instead of writing everything in the file.
