I got a HP Elitebook with a Quadro 2000M and it works great. Although CS5 doesn’t support it natively (CS5.5 would have straight support for that), I had to do the text file hack. I can run Full HD DSLR stuff and R3D with it quite nicely.

Use the write on setting in paint.

You can draw over a layer by setting the paint settings to “paint on transparent” It might help to make a layer just for the paint effect. Also using the 1 and 2 keys you can jump backwards and forwards the time specified in the stroke duration.

If you want to grade a whole timeline you should probably try out the free Resolve lite.

Premiere and AME will try to guesstimate the overall size of the render. If it says something under 8,5 gigs you should be fine. If it’s going over that you’ll need to lower the bitrate.

You can do editing and effects with a Quantel iQ or with an Autodesk Smoke. If you have the money and time for it of course.

Have you tried clearing your preferences?

DVD-video is specced to standard definition. You can’t get get HD video on it. If you need HD get a blu-ray burner.
