As has been said before, this is not an AMD problem, the AMD works great with Vegas, I have an 64 X2 my self. There may be other problems though. Is this a brand new install? What motherboard? What video card? Which RAM?

I would not say I can prove, but I can definitely argue. The best possible quality available is the original MPEG-2 stream. Once you start pushing that over a connection that is not digital, you will get quality loss. When you re-encode this, you do not have the same quality as you did on the actual DVD.
Importing the DVD direct and the encoding should, give better results. Not that I have tried. Just don’t like the digital-analog-digital conversion which I expect would give you a loss in quality compared to: Import MPEG-2, render to DV or uncompressed AVI or something similarly editable, and off you go.

Do you have a DVD player in your computer? Why go through the capture process (with the resulting loss in quality) when you can import the DVD to the timeline straight from the DVD? Am I missing something here?

Dual core, lower speed, will generally be better. Depends a little on what renderer you use etc, but typically the two cores will be faster.

For video editing, your video card is almost irrelevant. Get one with the outputs you need, two cards is only for gaming.
Can’t answer 3, I haven’t tried either, I build my own computers. Not hard, might save you some $$s. Newegg is a good place to start.

Most of the job of rendering is done by third-party tools in Vegas (Main Concept etc), and it really depends what you are rendering to. I have an AMD 64 X2, and when I render to MPEG-2 I get 100% on both my CPUs.

Firstly, RITEK, no surprises there. You will have almost as much luck burning onto a kitchen platter as you will have burning to RITEK, which I guess you discovered. Media quality varies a lot from brand to brand.
Now, Verbatim, the problem with Verbatim is that they are not making their own disks, they re-brand other disks, so your Verbatims could be anything. They are quite possibly RITEK.
The problems you are describing are typical media/drive combination problems. The main culprit seems to be the media, but there are some pretty bad burners out there too. A bad burner given bad media will not burn anything at all. A good burner will usually burn bad media a bit of the time, but not all. Even with a good burner and good media, you will get some nice new coasters.
I would go buy some Tayo Yuden disks, you can get them from meritline or similar (I don’t think any retailers carry them)) and try those. If they do not burn OK, I would say your drive probably has some issues. A new, good, drive will cost you less than $50, so if you are having problems, I would update that too.
You can get a lot of good information about good and bad media and drives at https://www.videohelp.com/. One thing you should definitely do is to download some DVD identifier software to verify what Verbatim disks you have, I am willing to bet they are RITEKs.

Rendering is codec dependent, so what happens when you render is not really something that Vegas can control. When rendering to MPEG I have my CPUs running full steam. If the AVI rendering doesn’t, then the codec doesn’t take advantage of the two cores.

I am not sure what you mean by “two days rendering”. I sincerely hope it didn’t take two days to render :-). If it did take that much time, it seems there is another problem.
You also mentioned in another post about Vegas not utilizing your two cores. I have an AMD X2 4400, and no other piece of sofware so effectively utilizes my two cores as does Vegas. If I use TMPGEnc (which can now make use of multiple CPUs) to encode, it will never get the CPU utilization of any of my CPUs up to more than about 80%, most of the time lower. When rendering with Vegas both my CPUs are between 97 and 99% for the entire rendering process. I am not sure how you can utilize two cores better than that.
On the other hand, rendering is some times a time-consuming process, and having help would be nice. If Vegas could hand off some of the rendering to a grephics co-processor, that would be nice. A GPU is designed specifically to do some of the things that we do when video editing, but perhaps less than you think.
A GPU is created to do advanced rendering such as shading, bump-mapping, sprite-handling etc. These are highly specialized tasks, and not used all that much in the rendering process. The exception being primarily where you do an amount of fancy titeling (moving 3D text for example) or 3D transitions. Rendering from AVI to MPEG-2 for example, would not gain that much by utilizing the GPU.
As for 8 -> 10 bit and Sony promoting Premiere with theire cams… I don’t need one, and the other is quite obviously a bad idea on part of Sony.
I have tried Premiere, and quite frankly find it horrible. I am not at all sure what I would gain by using it over Vegas, and as you know I would lose a lot. Going to a clearly inferior product where my productivity would be significantly lower doesn’t seem to be a good idea.

No worries, Vegas does the PAL DV-AVI to NTSC MPEG-2 conversion quite well. I have done a few projects like this since mostly my visitors have PAL cams and I have an NTSC cam. When putting together “You were here” videos I frequently combine their PAL stuff with my NTSC stuff. No worries.

Any modern graphics card for the PC has a DVI output. You should be able to use just about any recent graphics card. If your PC is relatively recent I bet it’s graphics card already has DVI.
