DVD Architect burning problem
Posted by Bodape on July 6, 2006 at 12:15 amHi There
I’m having problems getting DVDA 3 to burn dual-layer discs. It prepares the project just fine but when it gets to the burning stage, it burns the lead-in but after that, the progress percentage stays at 0% and the ‘estimated time left’ time just gets more and more. After hitting cancel, it thinks about it for a while and then bombs out.
(I’m using a new external LaCie dual-layer writer connected via USB2)Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

July 6, 2006 at 1:18 pmThanks for that. I tried already and the disc doesn’t work properly. Chunks of the film go missing and chapters get messed up. Nothing to do with the programming in the application. DVD buttons don’t work as they should either.

July 13, 2006 at 3:32 amI am having the exact same problem.
I am using a Pioneer DVR-111 external drive. I tried using Ritek -R DL discs and my drive kept telling me the media was CD/CDRW. I tried Verbatim +R DL discs and ended up with the same exact problem you are having. I am having THE WORST time gettig ANY Dual/Double layer discs to burn in any software program. I have had no issues getting any projects I have authored to prepare. I just can’t get any of them to burn as DL.
From what I read Nero 7 has some issues putting the layer breaks in correctly. Although, I have also tried Nero 7 and again the project failed to burn correctly. Also tried TMPEnc DVD Author Dual Layer Edition and PGCedit w/DVD Decryptor. Both of those either errored out or failed to burn the disc correctly.
Anyone have any other reccomendations on burning authored Dual Layered DVDs? I’m about at my end of patience with this….

Since posting, I have figured out a solution which DOES work thank God although a little drastic!Since I found out the DVD Architect problem during some initial testing, I was able to abort and go over the DVD Studio Pro 3 which does burn dual layer DVD+R Verbatims perfectly. You can take all of your files including subtitles out of DVD Architect and they’ll go into DVDSP although MPEGs need to be elementary stream. I also found that the DVD Studio Pro subtitle output from DVD Architect does need simple adjustments to go into DVDSP or else you get an error message.
One point of use of DVD Architect is when it tells you where to put the layer break in your movie. This was extremely useful as DVDSP doesn’t have the same feature as far as I can see.
One funny glitch was burning discs from DVDSP is that when you burn a project, it sometimes gives an error at lead-in writing. All you have to do is browse to find the project folder (even if its already there by default) and select it again, and then it works. Strange!
Cheers

Firstly, RITEK, no surprises there. You will have almost as much luck burning onto a kitchen platter as you will have burning to RITEK, which I guess you discovered. Media quality varies a lot from brand to brand.
Now, Verbatim, the problem with Verbatim is that they are not making their own disks, they re-brand other disks, so your Verbatims could be anything. They are quite possibly RITEK.
The problems you are describing are typical media/drive combination problems. The main culprit seems to be the media, but there are some pretty bad burners out there too. A bad burner given bad media will not burn anything at all. A good burner will usually burn bad media a bit of the time, but not all. Even with a good burner and good media, you will get some nice new coasters.
I would go buy some Tayo Yuden disks, you can get them from meritline or similar (I don’t think any retailers carry them)) and try those. If they do not burn OK, I would say your drive probably has some issues. A new, good, drive will cost you less than $50, so if you are having problems, I would update that too.
You can get a lot of good information about good and bad media and drives at https://www.videohelp.com/. One thing you should definitely do is to download some DVD identifier software to verify what Verbatim disks you have, I am willing to bet they are RITEKs.
