    I just spent two days rendering a 40 minute segment on an AMD dual 3800 X 2 with 3 gigs of ram. Why can’t Vegas utilize the video card processing like Magic Bullet and Seious Magic products? Are they doing anything about that in version 7?

    And why is Vegas only 8 bit? Sony comes out with a highly successful HDV camera and promotes Adobe Premiere with it in magazine ads. Does the right hand not know what the left is doing at Sony? I always thought Premiere was a bad bet because you had to buy plugins that cost more than the program to make it work well. Then I see CineForm creating RAW video footage with a new camera and making it operate with the “open to improvement” Premiere and I think their “I’ll build a basic cut and dissolve program and you add the things that make it work and beautiful” approach isn’t all bad.

    I’d really like some comments that would give me a different perspective.

    I am not sure what you mean by “two days rendering”. I sincerely hope it didn’t take two days to render :-). If it did take that much time, it seems there is another problem.

    You also mentioned in another post about Vegas not utilizing your two cores. I have an AMD X2 4400, and no other piece of sofware so effectively utilizes my two cores as does Vegas. If I use TMPGEnc (which can now make use of multiple CPUs) to encode, it will never get the CPU utilization of any of my CPUs up to more than about 80%, most of the time lower. When rendering with Vegas both my CPUs are between 97 and 99% for the entire rendering process. I am not sure how you can utilize two cores better than that.

    On the other hand, rendering is some times a time-consuming process, and having help would be nice. If Vegas could hand off some of the rendering to a grephics co-processor, that would be nice. A GPU is designed specifically to do some of the things that we do when video editing, but perhaps less than you think.

    A GPU is created to do advanced rendering such as shading, bump-mapping, sprite-handling etc. These are highly specialized tasks, and not used all that much in the rendering process. The exception being primarily where you do an amount of fancy titeling (moving 3D text for example) or 3D transitions. Rendering from AVI to MPEG-2 for example, would not gain that much by utilizing the GPU.

    As for 8 -> 10 bit and Sony promoting Premiere with theire cams… I don’t need one, and the other is quite obviously a bad idea on part of Sony.

    I have tried Premiere, and quite frankly find it horrible. I am not at all sure what I would gain by using it over Vegas, and as you know I would lose a lot. Going to a clearly inferior product where my productivity would be significantly lower doesn’t seem to be a good idea.

    What are you rendering to get full usage of the cpu? I’m getting about 50% on avi files as are a number of other people. On another forum there was a thread about this and one noted “For instance, when I render a project to HuffYUV, all 4 cores run at 100%, however when render the exact same project to wmv, they sit at aroud 50%.” The question was if Vegas is codec render dependent. My long project was mpeg2 and it ran at 50%. It was complicated.

    Rendering is codec dependent, so what happens when you render is not really something that Vegas can control. When rendering to MPEG I have my CPUs running full steam. If the AVI rendering doesn’t, then the codec doesn’t take advantage of the two cores.
