One of my favorite subjects! 😉
Avid has lost a lot of market share in the last 6 years. It is an exponential flow away from them to FCP. Hard to gauge and neither side is going to tell you the truth. I’m in the LA market, which is one of the last holdouts for Avid, but at least 20 percent of this town has gone FCP, and that’s a conservative estimate.
Other places, like Florida, have gone overboard for FCP, but Oliver can address that better than I.
Grinner is probably right in his opinion, I truly believe that Avid’s time is running out to turn the market back in their direction.

There are NO GOOD LCDs right now! Get used to it.
We have seen and tested them all.
Off axis sucks on every single one.
Blacks suck on every single one. (Except for the VERY expensive eCinema which isn’t shipping yet)
The overly expensive Sony BVM CRT is a joke when it comes to blacks also.
Currently, the professional plasmas do a better job of black and off axis than ANY LCD! Unfortunately, the smallest size they come in is 42″.
SED technology (and it’s sister FED) is the best hope for the future, but it is still a few years away.
So what you are left with is getting used to the LCD monitor for correction. Get used to washed out blacks. Get used to sitting dead nuts center when you work. Get used to SD footage looking like crap.
Once you get over that, the JVC is the best deal of the lower end monitors. If you want to waste bigger bucks, go with the Sony BVM LCDs.
Personally, I can’t get used to the LCDs. I’m milking my CRTs for every last bit of breath. I recently re-tubed all my monitors before Sony runs out of tubes.

First of all, It doesn’t sound like you need skin smoothing. It sounds like your video starts out okay and then has an issue after the DVD encode.
If the edges are jaggy, it could be a field order issue. You need to stay consistent with your handling of field order throughout your pipeline.
As for skin smoothing, I use a glow filter like the one in BCC to give a little softening.

You are missing the conversion from 422 to 232 protocols. We use the https://www.addenda-elect.com/product.htm products for that. If you have a USB port, you can use the keyspan adapter.
