You are screwed. At this point in time Avid doesn’t mix frame rates. Before someone starts singing the praises of FCP which allows you to throw anything in the timeline, please be aware that FCP does a shitty job of frame rate conversion.

Hopefully, Avid hasn’t doe it yet because they can’t do it correctly. To give you some perspective, the boxes that do semi=gracefully take 30 frames to 24 cost upwards of 70K. Terranex is an example of that.

On the other hand, if the original source is film, you are lucky as that probably has additional frames added in a 2:3 pulldown. And Avid can remove these on capture. You can change your project to SD 23.98 under the format tab, then capture from the digibeta. Avid will assume an “A” frame relationship and remove fields accordingly. Unless this is accurate, you will end up with footage that looks steppy.

If your original footage is not film, take it through a Terranex at some place that knows how to handle this. Then work with the resulting 23.98 blown up footage.

If you have a lot of footage, capture it as I described above for your offline and live with the steppy look. Then when you have a locked cut, convert just the footage you used to 1080 23.98 on a Terranex and cut it in to your sequence. This will cut down on your conversion costs which aren’t cheap.

The normal conform route is to use the modify command to change the sequence to 720P. Then in a 720P project, decompose and capture the new decomposed clips. I don’t understand why you are going to an ALE? Or do you want all the footage in HD to continue cutting?

In the digital capture tool (for tape ingest) and the import box (for pictures), you have a pulldown menu that allows you to select the resolution you want to use. That is where you would choose 10:1, or whatever other resolution you want.

These numbers mean the amount of compression applied. So a 10:1 clip will be compressed to about one tenth of it’s original size.

1:1 has no compression.

Two thoughts. First, you r ex-employer has every right to ask you to sign a non compete. And you have every right not to. I see both sides, you either make a clean break and poach his clients, or you don’t and respect his right to his client base.

As far as posting the video, you really do need permission from whoever OWNS the work. If the client who owns it gives you permission to post it, then your ex-employer has nothing he can do about it.

If your ex-employer owns it, you are screwed.

Here is the fast way to highlight an area, and I may be off on terminology as I’m not in front of a system right now.

1: Drop a 3D warp effect on your shot.

2: Go to the shapes tab, select page fold, and adjust the top slider until the page curl disappears. (You don’t wan to use the shape at all, so you are bypassing it.)

3:In one of the hamburger menus in that pain, you select “Invert manual highlight”

4: Go to the highlight tab. Using those parameters you adjust the shape, location and density of your darkening of the rest of the picture.

Now you have a real time highlight effect.

You are screwed on the audio. Avid expects you to edit audio in ProTools, that is the only explanation I can come up with for why they have never fixed the audio editing in MC.

As for the dissolve, Job is right with the quick dissolve. If you are going to use that same effect over and over though, you can grab the effect icon when you are in effects mode and drag it to a bin. Then just drop it where you want.

Yes, you can mix sources. Set your project for 16:9. Avid will stretch the windows and make effects work for 16:9.

When you have 4:3 material, go to the reformat tab in the effects window. You will see an effect that gives you the black sidebars.

Or you can drop the reformat effect on and select 4:3 source and 16:9 final. This will give you an outline in the effects window that you can slide up and down (Tilt and scan) toe select framing. When you leave effects mode, it will stretch your footage vertically to fill the 16:9 window.

You export the timeline as any other one except that you want to make sure to select 16:9 in the export window options tab.
