April 15, 2009 at 3:36 pm in reply to: Editing in both 4:3 and 16:9

You will work in 16×9, then drop the reformat effect on your 4X3 footage.

Open the effect in the effect editor and choose 4X3 for source and 16X9 for target. This will blow up the 4X3 footage vertically to make it look right in 16X9.

You can move the framing up and down as needed in the reformat effect window.

[Dan Newton] “when I recapture the clips to 1:1 do I need to apply the effects again or will they be there already? “

Everything will be there, but you will have to re-render any non RT effects as Avid must recreate them in high resolution.

[Dan Newton] “When capturing the clips from each tape —- Do I need to rewind each tape to the beginning or will the Digi machine do that automatically? “

The Avid will rewind to the first clip automatically.

    April 13, 2009 at 5:43 am in reply to: 30fps to 24fps

[Ian Johnson] “I tried digitizing from the digibeta at 23.98 in a 24fps SD project, but the Avid didn’t want to let me use that deck. Does the DVW-A500 have a setting that needs to be changed to allow this? “

No special setting. This should work. I haven’t done true 24 in a while, but I guarantee 23.98 works.

[Ian Johnson] “It seems like it could be possible for Media Composer to handle something like this. It would need a kind of pulldown detection that will scan an entire clip and find changes in the sequence, rather than extrapolate from the first few frames. “

You need to tell MC what the pulldown is. It assumes that 0 and 5 frame endings are “A” frames.

[pallas weber] ” to avoid the washed out blacks do i need to change the setting in dvdsp or is it better to change it in the avid export settings? also, i used compressor to compress. i am under the impression that compressing in compressor as opposed to dvdsp will make for a better looking dvd,
is this correct? or does dvdsp compress again making for an uglier dvd?”

Compressor does the compression to create the MPEG files. DVDSP “Muxes”, or mixes all the data into one data stream. No compression is actually happening there.

I don’t think Compressor has a setting to interpret 601 levels, ( I reserve the right to be wrong here) so you would have to do it at the export from Avid stage.

The 1:1 is the quality of the video only. Audio quality you change by sampling at a lower rate like 44.1. No one should be capturing lower quality audio as the storage savings would be negligible.

So, don’t bother recapturing the audio, you already have the highest quality audio in the system.

Yes, you are right. However you do not need to recapture the audio, it won’t be better quality.

So make the copy of the sequence, delete ALL audio tracks, then follow the rest of you plan. When done recapturing, cut the audio back in from the original sequence.

This will save time in the recapture as having even a one frame difference between your audio and video edit in the timeline will cause Avid to create two clips to capture. Don’t waste the time.

    Hi Pallas,

Your next problem is that DVDSP assumes your file has RGB levels. Avid spits out 601 levels unless you tell it otherwise. If your DVD looks washed out in the blacks, that is what is happening.

April 11, 2009 at 5:35 pm in reply to: 23.976 NTSC to 720p 23.976 Seq Conforming Issues

[Jason Gillet] “I’m about to get this stuff working in 1080p. One other question the deck which is the 1200A doesn’t convert to 1080p. Will there be a pulldown issue introduced by going 1080i from the HD 1200A (it won’t do 1080p out) to 1080p into Avid. “

Dud, this is getting more screwed by the minute. Isn’t HD fun?

You can’t remove pulldown in HD on Avid like you can in SD. Do you have access to a converter, like a mini Terranex or an AJA FS1?

1080 is simple. There you just modify the sequence and decompose and capture. Use the upconvert in the deck to convert to 1080. Life is simple.

The only catch, is any of the footage still file based? That would be resized on ingest, not Avid’s strong point. I would resize the footage in After Effects, Sorenson or Compressor and convert to DNxHD at the same time so at least the import would be fast.

April 11, 2009 at 3:53 pm in reply to: 23.976 NTSC to 720p 23.976 Seq Conforming Issues

Now I see the problem, I have never actually done a 720P 23.98 sequence as I have a rule that “friends don’t let friends edit 720P in Avid.” This is from the conform guide and may God have mercy on your soul! 🙁

    Converting a 23.976p NTSC Sequence to 720p/23.976

Because the source edit rates are different for these formats, you cannot simply change the
    project and sequence format.

The following sequence is based on source material shot or transferred to 720p/23.976 and edited offline in a 23.976p NTSC project.

To convert a 23.976p NTSC sequence to 720p/23.976:

    1. In the 23.976p NTSC project, duplicate the final sequence and move it to a new bin.
    2. Decompose the sequence.
    3. Select the master clips and export them as a shot log file.
    4. Create a 720p/23.976p HD project.
    5. Import the shot log file into a bin.
    6. Batch capture the clips.
    7. Open the SD bin containing the duplicated sequence.
    8. Relink the SD sequence to the new HD clips.
See “Relinking Clips to a New Project Format” in the Help.
