Garrett, I too have been dealing with media management issues and here’s my most recent post if you’re interested. The input was really good. It deals more with archiving though.

Using it it here as well along with FCP 7. I tried to install the latest Avid Media Composer Trial on my mac and can’t get it to run. Just keeps crashing.

Jeremy, I don’t have LTO capabilities, but my archiving strategy is otherwise similar (with FCP 7):
– archive the camera cards (mostly AVCHD from an AF-100, some P2, GH1 cams, and Sony BPAV folders)
– Edit program, media manage final edit and archive that (which is the only transcoder content to get archived from the edit)
– Archive FCP project and XML version of entire project
– Archive any content not from principal photography (stills, archival footage, other formats, etc).with FCP X it looks like I just won’t have a media managed version for archiving, or rather it can, it’ll just be much larger than I need. I may just keep the texted/ textless quick times and the camera raw archives and re-transcode as needed (as you described).

Thanks for that Bill. I recognized that direction too and completely agree with your assessment; appreciate the simple explanation as well. In the long wrong it is cheaper to have more content more readily available and I’m all for shared online storage and access to media 24/7 that I can mobilize too as you did. Despite it’s faults I miss Final Cut Server.
Perhaps this is just one of those situations where FCP X is so forward thinking (as we’ve all experienced in one way shape or form) that media management in FCP X doesn’t address that efficient storage model I am looking for and you described so well. Drives are cheap, getting cheaper, however storing the transcoder media (all of let’s say) would skyrocket are costs and we’d have to have systems in place to manage all of that; we’d need large array bays just to have enough drive slots to have all of the media available, etc. etc.
Some of never had that luxury with FCS and still don’t with FCP X (as I look at my dusty Xserve RAID next to me).
i guess I better get on board, open the wallet and accept (knowingly) that this is the way everything is moving. Though media management a la FCP 7 is something I think is valuable even in the age of cheaper endless storage.

Found an error in my post above. I meant The “Duplicate Project + used Clips Only” does not take PORTIONS of clips.

I would prefer DLT tape or something similar, but we haven’t supported that option yet. What do you archive to?

No problem. I use Motion more anyway. perhaps I’ll look there to do this instead, but I was really trying not to have to leave Final Cut Pro for this.

I’ve been researching this very issue for months on both Apple’s boards and the cow and it blows my mind there’s no real media management. Nobody I’ve talked to so far has a solution.
I don’t know how people are backing projects up unless they take all of the storage for a project.
