Thank you all for your input. The clear conclusion from all I’ve heard is that DVD is the way to go. But one aspect of that is not clear to me:

Is it really important to create the dvd with the loop instruction in the authoring software? The only dvd software I have is iDVD. If NECESSARY I would buy other dvd authoring software (which do you recommend?).

Would it be okay to make a straight non-looping dvd using iDVD, and then have the dvd player (hardware) make it loop. I was looking at a Pioneer DVD-V5000 player, which has a feature for disc loop.

    Thanks again,
    Tam

Yes Johnny, you’re right, I don’t know that much about dvd authoring, my experience is more in After Effects. The only dvd software I have is iDVD on a Mac. If NECESSARY I would buy other dvd authoring software (which do you recommend?).

Locate your iMovie project file in the finder – then control click on it: that gives you a contextual menu in which the fourth item down is “Show Package Contents” – that will open the project package exposing your media folder. The clips you want to import to AE are in the media folder, and you would do best to option drag (copy) them to a different folder where they will remain visible to After Effects.

My company used to use LaCie drives almost exclusively. Lately we’ve had a lot of problems with them. I’d be curious to know whether the drives giving you problems are also LaCie.

I had a similar problem with a drive that spontaneously unmounted itself, although my problem was not limited to when I was rendering. It turned out the problem was a defective power supply – the little power “transformer” that plugs into the wall, and the drive plugs into it. Try switching your power supply with one of the drives you know for sure has no problem. I’d be interested to hear the outcome – let us know.

I’m on a Mac G5 running Panther. After Effects 6.5. Sorry – I should have said so in my first post.
