My project calls for me to use some footage which is on a DVD supplied by my client. (Not subject to copyright.)

What is the best way to import that footage into After Effects? Is there a way of importing the actual video file off the disk (as opposed to playing the dvd on a dvd player and capturing it like from an analog camera) ?

    Thanx

If you’re on Windows, try copying the files to disk then renaming them with an MPG extension. Import those into AE (or quicktime) and re-render (or export) as MOV or AVI before you start editing them.

I’m on a Mac G5 running Panther. After Effects 6.5. Sorry – I should have said so in my first post.

Why don’t you try ImToo DVD Ripper?

There’s a thing called MPEG stream clip that is great at this, and works with every kind of MPEG really well. You can download it here: https://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html I’ve used a few of these converters and I’ve found this to be the best by far.

Sorry about the delayed post, but I have a different solution to offer:

many DV cameras have analog inputs and you can hook them up to the analog outputs from a regular dvd player. (just remember to use the s-vhs plug and not the composite plug for best picture quality)

I did this recently and it worked like a charm! No rendering times or interpolating of pixels. My computer was hooked up to the camera and grabbed the video live as the camera translated the analog signals into DV firewire.
