I have 2 MyBook Studio external drives (500GB and 1TB) and they work very well.I use Firewire 400 and 800 connection working with lots of different kinds of footage.The speed of these drives are very good and for me they are reliable.
I also use G-Raid drives as well, but one of the Firewire port on the 2TB G-Raid drive is broken because of some reason.Apart from this it’s reliable regards to storage and speed.I also use 2, 1TB drives and they are perfect.

In my opinion I can recommend you MyBook Studio Series and G-Raid as well.I don’t have experience with other external drives.
