  • i usually do what Cameron outlined, but i think i’ll have to get the DH solution that David mentioned. here’s what i’ve been doing: assuming you are cropping this shot to go over another one, move the clip to the third layer, use a matte like Cameron mentioned or what i usually do is just go to the viewer/shapes/square (or whatever), put it on layer 2 under your desired clip, change the composite mode of that clip to “Travel Matte – Luma” and you’re set. i usually then select layers 2 and 3 and nest them and work with them in their own little world, but either way, what i like about this method is that you can just grab, scoot, shrink/grow your desired clip and see it’s effects right there in the canvas. when they are nested, you can grab, scoot, shrink both layers together in the viewer. the one bummer here is you can’t put a shadow on either of the individual layers, but you can on a nested sequence. either way, i’ll probably give DH Box a try…

Hey Jeff…no, i realize i’m in a little safer environment than ye olde Windows, but the editing Mac does seem to run quite a bit better if i reinstall on an annual basis. I’m also looking at getting a RAID installed, so in the process of moving tons o’ files around anyway, but thanks for the tip for the future on the utilities.

ya, they actually go into the trash…and the command/dump hadn’t worked either. restart, dump, all is well. hmmm… it has been awhile since i did a clean install…maybe it’s time again?

i’m all Mac, and archving a pile of client files to send to him, and he is all PC. i’ve formatted some drives to ExFAT to get around the 2GB file limit, and will send him those. this is the first time i will have sent him ExFAT drives, but from what i’ve read, he SHOULD be able to read them. if not, i still have copies of everything here that i could send again, maybe with the MacDrive reader on Mac-formatted drives.

it looks like the problem was going external drive to external drive. though i thought i had done that before with not such a terrible speed drop. oh well…

on the RAID, i’m looking at protection over speed. i’m mostly editing with Pro Res now, which takes up a ton of space. do you guys also RAID two of your internal drives or mostly just do the external RAID tower?

thanks Shane…maybe that’s the problem, going to USB to USB, FW 800 to 800, etc.

as for the RAID…i dunno much about it at this point. i suppose i’ll need a RAID controller card, and maybe an e-SATA card as well. looking at G-RAID mostly, but i hear good things about CalDigit as well. what’s your fave – or point me to a good thread on this as i know it gets discussed a lot…
