super slow file transfers . . .

well…they all have these little black wires coming out of them and then going into my computer…

If you copy from firewire to firewire…that is a bottleneck. Because all Macs come with one firewire bus….despite how many connections they have. So one bus would be handling the copy from and copy to if you had both via firewire. Same with USB…one bus, so USB to USB is slow. Firewire to USB…that’ll be faster…different busses.

What fast RAID connects via FW800? I think the G-Raids and Caldigit VRs top out at 85MB/s…not too fast.

thanks Shane…maybe that’s the problem, going to USB to USB, FW 800 to 800, etc.

as for the RAID…i dunno much about it at this point. i suppose i’ll need a RAID controller card, and maybe an e-SATA card as well. looking at G-RAID mostly, but i hear good things about CalDigit as well. what’s your fave – or point me to a good thread on this as i know it gets discussed a lot…

eSATA is pretty good…much faster than FW800. The same G-RAID or CALDIGIT VR on eSATA gets you over 200MB/s…faster than the 85MB/s of FW800. But those are RAID-0…meaning no protection. If you want speed and protection, you need RAID 5, and that’s more expensive and you will need a controller card or other connection type. Typically those are miniSAS. Look at the HDONE or GSPEED or MaxxDigital EVO HD series.

what is the capacity of each drive and how full are they? at about 80% they start to slow down. is everything slow on your system or just the transfers? Is this from external drive to external drive? Are you emptying your trash after cleaning up? Try running repair permissions from disc utility. Try disk warrior.

it looks like the problem was going external drive to external drive. though i thought i had done that before with not such a terrible speed drop. oh well…

on the RAID, i’m looking at protection over speed. i’m mostly editing with Pro Res now, which takes up a ton of space. do you guys also RAID two of your internal drives or mostly just do the external RAID tower?
