Thanks so much Erik. Maybe I’ll give it a go after I clone my startup drive…

I am having the same exact problem and was somewhat “relieved” to find out it isn’t a card problem. However it is a HUGE issue and Apple needs to get this fixed ASAP. I disabled OpenGL acceleration in AE and Photoshop and the flickering/freeze has not occurred again. What a shame to upgrade to CS5 and have to disable the OpenGL acceleration!!!#$%!

Brian,
I love you! I forgot that I had hidden the layer with my original build object from the object manager! That will teach me a lesson I won’t soon forget.
Thanks so very much, you have saved me a lot of time and I doubt I would have remembered I had done that!!
Have a great weekend!

I did not use the migration assistant to update my system. I had read that going from the Power PC to the Intel system made that problematic. I installed all software fresh from disk when I got my new MacPro, so I can’t blame it on not doing a fresh install.
I have the Master Collection and don’t want to go to the problem of reinstalling my entire suite, not to mention all of my customized interfaces and palettes. I’m still hoping that an AE update will fix the problem. Seems I’d rather convert audio to .mov instead of reinstalling…..

Yes, I’m on a new 8 core Mac Pro and I’ve been doing the same thing you’re doing. It IS a real pain and shouldn’t be an issue. I can’t import any kind of audio file, only QT files work to get audio into AE. Hopefully a future update will fix our problem.
Thanks for responding, I’m just glad to know I’m not the only one with this problem.
I’ll let you know if I find a solution.Suzanne

I’m on a Mac, which doesn’t keep me from converting to .wav, but even that won’t import and I get the same error message. It’s very strange and I’ve been using AE since version 4 and never had this kind of problem before.
I’ve tried converting the audio file with everything… Bias Peak, Episode, Soundtrack, Soundbooth, and AE still doesn’t like the file. And I’ve tried importing sound files from many different sources with the same problem each time.
I appreciate the suggestion. Anyone else having the same issue?

The first drive to dismount is an OWC Mercury with which I have never had a problem, and the second drive I tried was a LaCie 400gb, brand new.

I would consider that an option except that I also had the same problem with a second drive that I just purchased two days ago (a LaCie 400gb) and it just happened with it when I rendered a file. I did talk to Apple who said that I perhaps had too many drives attached to one port. I disproved that theory when the same thing happened with the new drive attached directly to the front port – it dismounted too.
I am now rendering from an internal serial ATA drive and so far am having no problems. I am now considering getting a SATA controller PCI card and drives since my firewire drives are not the reliable solution that I have been used to.
I do appreciate your response. I had thought something was wrong with that one drive until I moved all my files to the second drive and had the same problem. If I discover a solution I will repost.

I ran the benchmark with the following results:
Comp 1 – 83 seconds
Comp 2 – 1252 seconds or 20:52
And I’m just using an external firewire drive, no raid as in the best test results posted.

Just thought I’d share. I have been using a dual 2.0 gHz Mac and just bought a dual 2.7. The same file which rendered in 9 1/2 hours on the dual 2 rendered in 7 on the 2.7. I frankly was quite surprised as how much faster the 2.7 is and it is also considerably faster on ram previews. The 2.7 is a real joy to work with. I have 4 gigs of ram installed on both machines, running AE 6.5 on Tiger 10.4.1.
