September 30, 2011 at 1:46 am in reply to: fcp 7 with mini-sas cannot handle dual screen with high settingThanks everyone, I will try to convert my next project to proresLT and see how we go.
Jon, im using areca 1222x. i guess its a little too late now with the hitachi. i wish i knew that earlier… nobody told me about this when i purchased it from the dealer. i think not many people are familia with the system yet. i was using hitachi 3tb at first, and then they say that the problem may be because the 3tb drives are still unstabile.. so we changed to 2tbs and i chose caviar blacks because they are the most popular..

September 29, 2011 at 12:47 pm in reply to: fcp 7 with mini-sas cannot handle dual screen with high settingThanks John,
I have tried using the disk speed test and the drive seems to be working fine…
Its only giving me problem when it comes to fcp. other than that its fine.
Im using AIC only because it is faster to transcode to from the 5d h264 files. I use prores occasionally when i’m doing bigger projects.
thanks

July 21, 2011 at 7:53 am in reply to: 2tb x 8 bay raid 6 with areca card mini-sas causing fcp problemsorry for the slow reply.
I have actually been trying a lot of things with this system. I tried exchanging the actual ARECA CARD 1222x with a brand new one, re-installing fcp and also turning off NGC on the local hosts.. the problem is still there.
I have trashed all preferences, caches using digital rebellion. I start to think that the problem might come from other things inside my system that somehow create complications…
I have these two on my other pci-e slots:
– NewerTech MAXPower 6G PCIe eSATA RAID Controller card with port multiplier support
– caldigit 2x usb3 pci express card -> connected to drobo and esata dock
but again, it may not be the culprit anyway… I’m very very frustated at the moment.
At the moment I have two projects open in my fcp. one is a much bigger file containing 5 video tracks and 16 audio tracks and its playing fine. the other project only contains a rough storyboard with 1 music file (aiff) and text layers and this one keeps on dropping frame… I cannot play the text layer more than 2 seconds..
Both projects start at around the same time.. both played fine at the beginning. but now the text layer project stutters.. I have a feeling that its only a matter of time before the other project also stutters…
Any advice will be much much much appreciated.
thanks so much in advance

Hi Jon,
I’m so sorry for the delay in replying. I’ve been so busy editing and shooting last week.
I’m still editing with the stardom with constantly have to restart FCP because it will lag once it hits a clip that needs to be rendered. The seller asked me to try another areca card to see if the problem was with a faulty card so I will try that and see.

Hi Jon,
Thanks for your help.
The stardom at the moment is very inconsistent for me. I have put it on different slots on my PCIe macpro but still the same. My fcp would be very fast one time and then half hour later it will be very slow.
Thanks in advance again

the problem is still there.. although its a little bit better now.
the mini-sas can now play through text layer but its very inconsistent. It will slow down every now and then to the point that it is not workable..
I’m pulling my hair out and thinking of returning this item for istorage pro now….

ok this is weird but i have found some facts that go with it.
I have the project and the media in two places
1. firewire 800 raid5 drive (used by my editor to cut the long version)
2. mini-sas 8 bay stardom st8 (used by me to cut the short version using my editor’s fcp project file)I opened the project using my mini-sas and the audio was out of sync.
I found out that I had mp3 audio files whereeas my editor already converted the audio to aiff. so I copy and pasted the aiff file to my mini-sas drive and reconnected it to that file.
Still, its out of sync. Then I tried to reconnect the audio file to the one in the firewire800 drive and it worked!!! Its the same exact file.
I don’t know why this happened. I thought there’s something wrong with my mini-sas, but I copied and pasted that audio file to my desktop and reconnected from there and its still out of sync.
Please help.. I have used digital rebellion software to clean up my fcp… still no success..
thank you

hi John,
thanks for replying.
Its AIC codec. We have been using the same codec with color previously for quiet some time without issues… but mainly we previously worked with not so many audio like this particular project has.
not sure if that would make a difference though..
thanks

Hi Michael,
Thanks for letting me know. I started using AIC because of doing same day edits and I needed to transcode my 5d mark ii footage onto an editable format. I did some tests and prores transcoded a lot longer than AIC does so thats why I chose AIC.
I also couldn’t tell the difference in terms of image quality between the two. However I didn’t know much about the RT performance. I’m now considering going back to prores… would you recommend proresLT?
