🙂 thanks. Solved it by sheer luck. Trying to find a solution to the ridiculous gamma shift problem between FCP and AE and noticed it appear and disappear.

ah, got it, it’s when the working space is set to something other than none.

Never mind, found them. Someone had installed the Blackmagic codecs and for some reason that was hiding the Apple codecs from AE. They showed back up again after deleting the Blackmagic codecs.
