thanks for the post, Ill give this a go.
Id been told that it takes ages to do it this way and its quicker making a self contained movie!. I which there was just one way of doing it and it worked really well!

as for dv since switching to the mac form pcs Ive only used it once and the results where amazing.

Im assuming the problem Im having is due to the footage being 50i

I have the following workflow
complete edit select all the clips in the time line and go file>export>quick time conversion select proress and check the make interlaced box.

its made a massive improvement.

Ive checked and yes its on. there is a tick next to full in render all and render selection.
any idears on what else it could be?

when I tryed it I was told it is not possible to log and capture proress over fire wire.

Thanks for the reply, where do I find the mix down option?
I’ve got my movie on the time line, I’m rendering it at the quality I want then I’m going to go export self contained.

Do I do the mix down when it’s on the time line or do I select this when I’m exporting?

Ive sorted it out now but this is what I did.
it was taking 2 hours + to make a 6min quick time file and it wasent working well.
so I went to the orginal time line and exported the 6min movie as self contained in the same format it was already in and then I made aa new time line and imported that movie.

I exported it off the time line as a pal dv anamorphic movie.

I re imported this and made a pal dv time line and printed to tape.

I dont no why this wouldent work untill I made a self contind movie in the orginal format if any one can tell me please do!
