I restarted my machine, stopped some services, and was able to get 1024MB of ram available for preview, which allows me work in 30 second steps, which is fine for now.

However, there is a further complication. The item I want to motion track only appears about 90 seconds into the clip, so even if I am able to dynamically preview, I do not know how to motion track something that only appears some time into the event.

The issue with the start tracking frame still exists – it does not seem to have any effect.

Any suggestions/advice would be welcome

I regularly use SVP to render for Mac, as the shows are run in Qlab. The videos are typically being projected onto several 8 x 6 ‘ screens around/behind the stage – sometimes using a matrix triple-head for separate images, sometimes using Arkos for edge-blending to get a bigger image… (projector budgets!!)

In SVP, I use the Quicktime render, 800×600 progressive, 3Mbps, square pixels and the results look good. It does tend to depend on the size of projection, and the quality of source material, but I would recommend you start with these settings, and then experiment – then save your custom template…

Use: borisfx1/borisfx1 – you may need to disable passive mode if possible…

There is one file in the directory – this is a snapshot from a bigger file which as a number of clips I want to use. Unfortunately the tripod was sticking the day they were shot, and ideally I want to try and smooth out some of the jerkiness in panning…

Every clip I try to analysis just goes black once finished. I did try smooth, and whilst it did work to an extent, it seemed to zoom in by about 35-40% does not look great.

I did read the documentation several times, and did try some different attribute values, but none of them improved things. For example, when I turned off auto-scale, I ended up with a tiny picture, which moved off-screen every time I set any value…

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

This has happened to me a few times, and I am not saying I have a very scientific answer, but it is usually down to the fact that there are some keyframes present which should not be. Just to rule this out, I would suggest removing all keyframes from one of the sections where it is doing this, then add them again. use the next/previous keyframe buttons at the bottom of the keyframe section to move through them and delete them one at a time. I have found sometimes that I have added two keyframes to the same place, and depending on the effect this can exhibit the behaviour you have described…

I echo John’s comments. I spent 2 years working with VMS and it taught me a huge amount. I only switched to VMS Pro recently to take account of some of the 3D stuff in the likes of Boris FX, and the multi-cam facility which I am now starting to work with.

I had been a Pinnacle user for years, and only when I got to try VMS did I realise how much I had been suffering… I genuinely never looked back…

So start with VMS – and when you are ready look to upgrade. The value you get for the cost of VMS is incredible, and when you are ready to upgrade the chances are Sony will be doing one of their upgrade offers in any case (which is how I upgraded recently…)

VMS – like every other bit of s/ware has its quirks – but at the end of the day, I repeatedly turn out videos and DVDs that look great, and people are very happy with. That, plus the incredible support that people here at the COW give really add up to something special.

Yes, I had read and followed the documentation – the PDF docs for each effect are comprehensive (if not a little daunting…) I did try changing some of the settings as described in the docs and to no avail. I will pull out a section of the video and send a link directly to support with it at suggested.

Ok, that worked.. PNG – perfect fades and really clear picture…

I clearly have a lot to learn… I thought PNG was only for still images – does this mean that the .MOV file contains a sequence of still PNG images, each one representing a full frame?

I noticed also that when I select PNG I cannot set the bitrate? Does this mean that each image is a full-res PNG resized to the resolution of the project? If this is the case, how is the bitrate for the video events in the project determined?

Good advice as always – thanks. A local shop here rents a number of these cameras by the day/week, and so I plan to try a couple of them out before committing (including the AX2000)….
