I had this happen to me last year and the client has been bringing the raw footage to us for editing. After they figured out what it was costing for us to fix their work, the writing was on the wall. We are shooting their next two events next week.
Also, they shot something very expensive and then taped over what they shot with B-Roll.
Expensive lesson.
Always be the hero. We trained them to shoot, just like a surgeon could train you to do heart surgery. One serious mistake and jobs go out the door.

Play around with the Macro function. If you have an extreme closeup situation, the macro with throw the background out of focus quite a bit.
Another thing is to get back from your subject.The chips are still only 1/2″ and the lens is a compromise. Sometimes a lens extender will give you a bit more of what you want. Outside of that, it’s a lens kit and a few thousand bucks.

When the client does the choosing, we hand them a certain amount of responsibilty to go with it.
In the case of actors, we try to have a backup, but that is really hard to do within budget. That would mean having two sets of actors lined up for every job. However, we always work with an agent because then, it’s their responsibility to provide the contracted product (actor) at the provided time, place and rate. And, the agents have insurance.

There is no difference between a ccd and cmos, If anything, get an adapter and go to a 2/3″ lens. You get better glass, probably more zoom and they’re larger and let in more light. You’ll be able to rent 36x or 44x sports lenses when you need to. 1/2″ lenses are marginal in comparison.

Very funny. We’ve had that very thing happen twice. And, they all think that it fixes itself automatically. The last guy that brought this to was a film school student, and his stuff was 16×9 HDV. Kinda make you wonder…
