    Tim,

You must be as sexy as I am. There isn’t day that goes by that someone doesn’t try to screw me.

Many years ago (1984), during my automotive business days, I did the same thing with a very good friend. I built engines and drive trains and he did body work. We rented two adjoining spaces in an industrial park and cut a large doorway between the two.

We got a deal by renting two spots and he was there a week before we got married so we decided that I would pay him my half of the rent and he would write one check. This worked really well until he had financial problems and then, one day, the land lord came strolling through with an eviction notice. It seems like there were 60 days of late rent notices that I never saw. The next day, my doors were locked and I had to come up with $3,000 to get my doors opened. The only thing that saved my tail was my cancelled checks for my half of the rent. This proved that I attempted to pay the rent.

I still partner a lot of jobs with other companies and I’m a lot more careful about things now.

Well, the company is based in Japan and the manual might be written there and converted. It does seem like some very necessary things have been left out. The menus are vague on some points.

Sorry about the horn and we used to call Triumph Bonnevilles “Thumpers”. They were 650 dual carb bikes.

I haven’t ridden a Royal Enfield since 1967. Is yours a rigid frame or a later sprung unit? I rode rigid Harleys for a long time and the parts would just fly off of those things; mirrors, mufflers, license plates, derby covers, chicks, taillights, all kinds of stuff.

Did you lose the horn or did the wire save it? Do they make a more modern bracket? It was probably made from a lesser metal than it needed to be. If it had a bend in it, it needs to be heat treated. I’d be happy to take a look at it if you’d like to send me a photo or the unit itself. I built off-road race cars for years before getting into video production in 1982 and got out of the car business in ’87. I was a steel fabricator and made lots of brackets that held very expensive parts on.

Calling people out of the blue is very difficult and you need to be able to handle rejection. The main problem is this: When ever anyone cold calls our office, the receptionist’s instructions are to blow them off. At most, she will allow them to send something in the mail.

The lower someone is in the food chain, the more likely they are to say “no”. You have to somehow get a bit higher. I would canvas an office building with promotional packages containing a short promo piece and a demo disc. Ask who might be in charge of marketing or instructional work. If you have to leave it, try to make an appointment later to have a ten minute visit with the proper person.

If you’re going to cold call, have a script set ready. A script set is a set of pages that you kind of read when you speak. It keeps you from rambling or forgetting to make a point. Practice on a friend.

All good sales people have a script when they’re starting out.

Cold calling scares the crap out of me.

Todd, have you checked into CineGear, in June, in L.A.? I see a lot of new stuff there and a lot of those guys don’t look like they’ve got any money to spare.

February 27, 2008 at 4:59 am in reply to: Panasonic refuses to honor my HVX rebate!!!

    Hi Greg,

It seems like you’re really frustrated and we don’t blame you. Most of the time when there is a rebate hold up, it’s usually a small thing that is standing in the way.

The Creative Cow is the world’s largest production forum and it is monitored by the major players. Jan is a regular and she is here all of the time helping with everyone’s concerns. Panasonic is concerned with their customers and will always honor a legit rebate submission.

We would appreciate a more professional approach. Many of us have faced your predicament and have resolved it through the proper channels. Our unpaid participants are here to help you.

Hang in there. Jan will get to the bottom of it.

    An apology would be appropriate.

I mentioned the EX-1. It throws 1920×1080 HD out of the SDI port. It DOES NOT push 24P out of that port though, without pulldown inserted.

If that is too light, look at the ICONIX camera head. Lenses are limited but the camera portion is quite impressive. https://www.iconixvideo.com/index.html
