In order to use an ampmeter, you must first locate the box and then identify the circuits. You can, however, buy a device that plugs into a wall outlet and sends a signal down the wire. You then pass a detector over the breakers and that will indicate which breaker the outlet belongs to. This is out of the question in Todd’s situation.
When we’re stuck with the questionable amperage, we try to pull it off with fluorescents. That doesn’t work when traveling.
Without going to a more efficient light like a Frezzi or a Joker, Todd is in an almost impossible position.
We have all of our impoetant computers on battery backups. Too bad about the weather thing. That must have been a panic filled moment. I keep laughing about it because it’s happened to us a few times when we wrwe assured that the circuit was clear.

We own 2 EX-1s but here’s my advice based solely on your desire to save money.
1. Borrow the HVX. (Do a test ahead of time)
2. Rent the EX-1 (Do another test. Shoot in the HDV mode)
3. Buy the consumer camera. (Does it do 60P ?)
Here is my experience from last year: I took a JVC 250 to Oshkosh Wisconsin to shoot library footage of the planes and activities.
I shot in 60P although something in my gut said “Don’t do it!) I should have listened, I had a nightmare of a time with the 60P footage. First of all, I could not find a deck to play it. I had a friend who upgraded the firmware on his deck just to help us out. The shots were nice and crisp but it took some work to get them into the computer. We did not have access to the camera any more. This was before they (the 250) were released to the public.

We use QuickBooks but it is far above what we need. Talk too your bookkeeper to see what they prefer. My bookkeeper can shoot through our books in no time. It saves big bucks at tax time. We send her our file once a month and we back up on-line with Intuit. Very reliable.
We have built a bunch of customized reports and they save us a lot of work. You can input your monthly bills and it will prompt you to pay them.
You’ll need QuickBooks if you own lots of gear, hire people, or need something comprehensive. A lot of single person shops get by on Quicken.
