I just helped someone load a large amount of gear into one last Sunday and she said it was “Fantastic”. But, if you’re thinking of buying one, go rent one first and put it through the paces. if you search the web, you can probably get a car for $ 9.95 a day on a Tuesday.

David, This reminds me of *Edit 10 years ago. That software only worked on a particular Intel chip set. No matter what anyone did, it only worked on the system it was designed for. And, if you installed Word, the whole thing would crap out because of a conflict in the registry. On our FCp machines, we have every software under the sun.

The thing that will keep you in business the longest with a long list of long term clients is “fairness”. Yeah, you also have to offer a lot more things like great quality, on-time / on-budget delivery and an outstanding set of ethics. Bla bla bla. Some of my clients have been with me for over 20 years, starting with S-VHS production. One thing that I have never done is to claim copyright, except when I’m the victim of nonpayment.
There have been dozens of clients who’s first question was “Who owns the copyright to my footage?” My answer is “You own everything that you pay for”. Holding a client’s footage hostage in order to get future work is professional suicide. Regardless of the intellectual property laws, to them, it looks like nothing more that trickery or greed.
I don’t mean to come down on you hard on this but I run my business on the “100% referral” business model and charge what I call “The Happy Price”. They’re happy, I’m happy. Everybody’s happy. As silly as it sounds, people love it when I say those words. Again, it’s all about fairness.
Hire someone to chop that thing down to 3 minutes, today. Even if you lose a few bucks in the process.

STOP charging by the finished minute. This was an idiotic practice from many years ago and it makes no sense. Charge by the project using any formula but that one. I guess this means that you charge $400 for a 30 second commercial, right? And $ 72,000 for a 90 minute seminar taping?
So, if you build a 12 minute spot and they ask to cut it down to 3 minutes, that means $ 2,400. And you wonder why you’re having problems.
Try charging for your time with a range of dollars that makes sense. We have a piece on our website that is 20 seconds long and cost $ 68,000. They should have hired you for $ 275.

Circular Vs. Linear Polarizers
There are two types of polarizing filters available — linear or circular. Linear polarizers are more effective and less expensive than circular ones. But circular polarizers are needed with just about any camera that has a through-the-lens metering system, or autofocus.
The reason for this is that both of these systems use semi-silvered mirrors to siphon off some of the light coming though the lens. If that light is linearly polarized it renders either the metering or the autofocus ineffective. This means that you’re going to have to buy circular polarizers unless you’re shooting with a pre-1970’s camera, or a view camera.

Basically, the linear type may affect your autofocus or exposure but they’re generally cheaper. The circular type will (should) always work.
My advice is to always get the good stuff. Not necessarily the most expensive but just not the cheap way out. Rob a bank if you need to. That seems to be very popular right now. Federal time is a cakewalk.
BONUS TIP!!!
Here’s one for all of you. You can use a polarizer to take the shine off of a bald head or a cheek. Secondly, you’ll have to open the iris a stop so it softens up that background a touch.

When my wife joined the company, she asked why the guy across the hall had awards and I didn’t. Same reply “All you’re doing is buying them”. Her reply: “So, Let’s buy some”. We applied and won for two years and quit when we had a wall full of paper and a trophy case full of glass and brass. It is amazing how many people have hired us solely on the award thing. And, I usually tell them exactly why the dates end at 2002. “When the award case filled up, we stopped applying”. They know we were qualified to win them and that we didn’t go overboard. They don’t care about the dates. And we have a wide spread of award types. Also, I never make an issue of them until they ask and even then, I play them down and let the wife brag about them. Kind of a good cop – bad cop sort of thing. Hey, nobody else reads this stuff on the internet, do they?
