Well, what you might consider is charging the new rate but give them some free time based on their continued loyalty.

However, some people look a the number under the hourly charge column and never look at anything else.

With the economy floating around and equipment getting cheaper, it’s difficult to get past the perception the some people have about hourly rates.

Don’t give that jerk nuthin’. YOU own the tapes and the copyright. HE owns the rights to his image. Neither of you have nuthin’.

I have dealt with his kind before and they have never prevailed. Consider this a lesson in bad human nature. Newbies get so excited that they get to do something, they forget that it’s a business, not a creative outlet.

Send him a bill and sue in small claims if he doesn’t pay. Keep any and all letters, emails, answering machine recordings as evidence. Have everyone write down dates of phone calls and content. Do this NOW.

In the future, get 50% up front. And deliver only when they have MONEY. He planned this from the beginning and has you scared to death.

    Learn this when you’re young.

It may work after a day or two. We had the same thing happen in Alaska with an S-VHS camcorder in ’87 and after 3 days, everything worked fine.

Or, if it is a corrosion issue, things will only get worse.

Maybe it needed to be in one of those underwater bags ????

Looking for a small jet. Only need to make short hops over to LA and back to Phoenix. Needs to get great mileage on jet fuel and I want it to hold 8 people.

    I have $ 5,000. Have any ideas?

May 23, 2011 at 12:56 pm in reply to: Airline cases

Some airlines make exceptions for media and production people. Southwest, for example, allows our bags to be oversize and overweight if you have a production company business card. However, print the exemption off of the website and keep it with you as I had one counter agent laugh at my suggestion that a 65 pound suitcase was OK.

May 3, 2011 at 1:34 pm in reply to: Overnight hours shooting rates

I feel that every situation has it’s own set of rules. There are times when extra charges apply and sometimes not. Many times, I will charge extra for my crew and not myself and this tends to go over big with good clients. Of course, this is an incentive to call us in the future and old clients are the bulk of our business these days.

All things considered, you just have to do what’s fair for everyone, especially yourself. And I’ll take repeat business over a few bucks any time.
