Did you search the 2003 COW archives for “dots” with “Ebberts” as the author?
Use the “search posts” button at the top left.

Expressions are better than motion math. MM creates keyframes which need to be deleted if you don’t like their effect, whereas expressions are live and can be changed more easily. They’re based on Javascript.
For basics, read the manual, but for more, go here:

It depends. If you want the logo to look “3D” with depth, you can buy Zaxwerks Invigorator. If you need the whole thing to have depth, you might need a “real” 3D application. If you don’t need depth in the objects, you can use AE.
If you like the Xbox ripping thing, you’d need a 3D app for that because that background has thickness and it rips in three dimensions.
Do you have an link to an example?

If you really want that to happen, click the “collapse transformations” switch on the sub-comp’s layer in the main comp. It looks like a sun.
Sometimes you get unexpected results when that switch is clicked, so be warned.

I’m not sure why you mentioned proxies in this context, unless I’m missing something. Proxies are files that are temporarily used to replace compositions or files that are too large to render quickly. They are lower-res substitute files.
You use “Fit to screen” in AE when you want to shrink a 640×480 layer so it fits into a 320×240 comp, for example. The other poster gave you the shortcut for this command.
Try alt< (or opt<) to reduce the magnification of the comp window. You can only magnify the comp window according to the sizes in the magnification button at the bottom left of the comp window. If you want your composition to fill the computer screen on RAM playback, click the "full screen" switch on the time controls palette. The comp image won't appear any larger than your current comp window settings, but it will be surrounded by black. Check the help under "looking at the workspace". Hope that helps, Steve

Hmm. I only had that problem when I manually altered the prefs once, but everything was fine after that. I don’t know why it happens every time you launch.
Normally, your prefs are saved when you close AE.
We might need more information. Specifically:
1. you must have changed something in your setup to make this error happen, if AE worked before. What did you change?
2. What OS?
3. Is this a legit install?Anybody else?
