Sorry — select “save target as”, and save as .htm. Then go in and change the extension from .htm to .aep.

    Gotta fix that sometime.

I’d keep Task Manager open as I work to see when the second instance of AE shows up and how my RAM usage grows. Maybe you have bad RAM.

How much RAM do you have, by the way?

July 8, 2005 at 7:15 pm in reply to: DOF with Card Dance

Unless there’s a DOF switch within the Card Dance effect parameters, you’re stuck. AE’s DOF (within the camera) only affects layers in space.

A layer with Card Dance applied is still just one flat layer to AE. The Card Dance effect just makes a fancy Card Dancey “movie” on that one layer.

July 8, 2005 at 6:38 pm in reply to: Expression aggression..

Because you highlighted the position property of layer A, the pickwhip applied the expression to the entire position property of layer A.

If you had first written this for position on layer A:

    [position[0],position[1]]

then highlighted position[0], then dragged the pickwhip to the x position of layer B, the proper expression would have only been applied to position[0], since it was highlighted.

    Try it!

AE doesn’t do raytraced reflections, where one surface is a mirror, reflecting another.

You need to fake it with one copy of each object on either side of the table, as if there really were a duplicate world on the other side of the “looking glass”. For an example, go here:
https://www.reidroberts.com/aeprojects/ and save (r-click & save) the “faux raytraced reflections” project about halfway down.

For raytraced reflections, you need to use Combustion (IIRC) or a “real” 3D app.

Yikes! Even 20 minutes of DV25 is 4-5 GB.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DV

Have you tried Sorenson 3 (the Pro version costs money) or WMV?

Keep in mind those are delivery codecs, not intermediate codecs, so there will be some degradation. They’re not meant to be reworked, re-edited or recompressed.

    Some Motion benchmarks:
    https://www.barefeats.com/motion.html
    https://www.filipowicz.ca/motion/ramresults.html
(I think the top graphics card on site #2 should be a 9800, not 9600)

The benchmarks may not be up-to-date, but they indicate that you will benefit from the fastest processor, best graphics card, and most RAM you can get. I’m getting the ATI X800, because it has good reviews and only takes up one slot.

AE isn’t nearly as picky as Motion.

Haven’t heard any issues with the new G5.

    Hope that helps,

July 8, 2005 at 1:53 am in reply to: how to do this?

After keyframing the start and end, I tend to keyframe the mask(s) at the extremes of the object’s motion, allowing AE to interpolate the mask shape between those extremes.

The keyframes then end up on whichever frames are appropriate.
