After Effects crashing – – – need help
I know that this is probably a hardware problem but whenever I use too many layers in an After Effects or a Photoshop project I notice that the programs will freeze up and I’ll have to force them to quit to be able to continue with the project. I also notice that when I look at the task manager it thinks that there are two programs of After Effects open and it says that each is not responding. Has anyone had this problem before? Any ideas? Thanks you guys are the best.

I’d keep Task Manager open as I work to see when the second instance of AE shows up and how my RAM usage grows. Maybe you have bad RAM.
How much RAM do you have, by the way?

I have 1 gig of ram and when I have the Task manager opens it looks like I have a normal about of CPU dedicated to the processes and then it just drops to 1 or 2% and that’s when it crashes.

How about RAM usage just before the crash?

This is something I’ve complained about to adobe since 6.0 was released. On larger heavier projects, whether PC or mac, AE just freezes a lot. Can go like that for 2 minutes or even never recover. Save often.
Try hitting the caps lock when that happens. Caps lock disables AE’s image update, so it might save you. Sometimes it works if you get it before AE completely freezes, but usually it’s too late.
